Whenever I gas up, and I undo the gas cap, I get this whoosh sound. Is air whooshing in, or is air whooshing out? Just curious. Bee Jay
Check this out......This worked for me... http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=157597 Manzo
I'm more interested in what comes out of your mouth. Run your horse hard for about 30-40min..then pop the rear hood and reach around and grab hold of the union-tank connecting pipe....if there are some curse words that begin to whoosh out of your mouth let me know.
...and all these years I thought that sound was air rushing in. I would think as fuel being used up and pulled from the tank, that would create void in the fuel tank and thus leading to a vacuum state inside the fuel tank and therefore air rushing in as you open the fuel cap...., no? Can someone with better automotive knowledge please explain why would air rush out of fuel tank instead of in. TIA
As gasoline warms up throughout the day and as you drive around, the gasoline builds pressure in the tank (this pressure aids the fuel pump in its operation). The whoosh sound from that gas vapor also proves to you that the seal on your gas cap is working properly.
+1....whoosh goes out. Note the cap holds in pressure to meet evaporative emissions requirements. The 'cap test' is a normal part of emissions testing on newer cars in CT.
mine makes a whoosh sound too! err. my honda... so is it in or out? I think its out since I'm up at 5000' altitude. lower ambient pressure at altitude maybe tank isn't venting as well as it should? even my old explorer did this too. probably because of low pressure outside.
on the topic of fuel tanks, does everybody's gas needle swing wildly when taking curves on a less than 1/2 full tank? For example, if at rest my tank is 1/4full according to the guage, when I take turns to the right, the guage dips and the yellow reserve light goes on. When I tank turns to the left, the gauge goes past 1/2 full. It makes it really hard to trust the car that I'm not about to run out of fuel, so I try to keep it over 1/2 full at all times, but that worries me about the whole stale fuel issue....
Sounds like a broken fuel gage to me. They are damped out to avoid that bouncing. Back in HS my girlfriend's ancient Buick used to do the same thing.
Eric, My guage got a bit erratic a few weeks ago. I did an Fchat search and someone in a post mentioned that the fuel sender is sensitive to alcohol content in the gas (which apparently some stations add). I had filled up at a different station than usual, so I thought that might be it. I went back to my usual station, and after two fillups, the gas guage is back to normal. So you might try different gas before anything else... - Eric
Hold a match to the cap before you open it. Light match and if the flame puffs past you, it's outgoing. If your car burns up, it's inbound.
interesting. Which brand station are you using that works for you? I'd guess that in our area, they'd have a common supply chain.
OK, so it's wooshing out. I just verified. So what is presurizing our gas tank, especially when we are pumping gas out at pretty good rates sometimes. Is air being pumped in? Bee Jay
My usual station is Exxon. I can't remember the name of the off-brand station where I filled up with the gasohol. Somebody told me once that all of the stations in a given geographic area tend to get their basic gas from the same source -- then all of the brand-specific additives are put in at the pump. I have no idea if this is true or not...
