WINDOWS! (hey, sorry, it's time for winter bench racing around here)

I keep thinking how much faster my GTB windows move compared to any other 308 I've had or seen, so I timed them last night when I was putting it away. Hit the switch and stopwatch at the same time, and found it takes 2.6 seconds for full travel. Up and down took the same time within my coordination margin of error. Sorry, no video, so just on the honor system. Can anyone beat my car? ;)

I'm probably at 5 or 6 seconds I'd guess, on the slow side. I dont have the "boosters" and I havent yet installed Birdmans fuseblocks (which I'll get to as a winter project I guess). Mine appear to do fine for the first 3/4, and slow up when they near the top. That indicates that maybe I have the "old hard grease" problem rather than an electrical probrem.

So, I'm out of the race.......

    Anyone else....

That's pretty speedy.... my driver's side takes about 3 seconds... the passenger side about 5.

The logical question is - Did you do anything special to make your windows so fast ? (mine are about 6 sec)

#20405 is pretty fast...I'll take your challege!

Keep the motor grease fluid, a little spray silcone on the window channels....that's all I have done, since buying that one.....

Remember guys, my times are in 29 degree weather and at 700 feet above sea level. Just think how fast I would be if the grease was 90 degrees or my glass was only pushing thin mountain air out of the way. Whew! it boggles the mind.

BTW Wade, I like your comment. I keep buying parts too for cars I might own some day. I'm sure there is a disorder for that, maybe I can get a grant to buy more parts and do a study....

So until Tex posts his times, #21567 is still claiming, "Fastest in the world".

    Fellows,

You can shave off a few tenths by adding a 4 degree taper to the interior side of the glass and another tenth by cutting a tiny (2mm) V channel 5mm down from the top on the exterior of the glass...this improves laminar flow by about 22%.

Replacing the track felt with Wight cotton felt made from the coats of free range sheep adds another handful of tenths...it's pricey, but this is racing, right?

Nitriding the assemblies also makes the moving parts much more resistant to wear as well as more amenable to lubrication with today's synthetic lubricants. Selecting a good 10 or 12 turn electric racing motor will reduce your times by quite a huge amount, but often require stronger lift gear and tension wires ass well as the addition of a properly sized heat sink for the decelerator unit and quite possibly will require the installation of an exterior NACA duct to cool the works.

Posted my windows video on Yahoo Ferrari Tech forum after I rewired both doors. Memory serves it being 2 seconds down and 3 up. As I don't have a stopwatch I will defer the win to you.

Gravity does help, down definitely being quite fast. In addition to bringing fused 12V into the door and adding 2 relays (per side), I also spring loaded the idler pulley and put a limit switch on the bottom.

Ain't it great having zippy winders!

I propose a bracket system. That way we could have more interesting racing with better results. I'm not sure this is fair for us guys with original window motors (ie no boosters, grooves, grease, etc). We should not be in the same bracket with guys running sub 4's or even sub 1 days. Just trying to keep it fair...

LOL! One of the 'quirks' of my car is that drivers window will only go fully up if the door's closed whereas passenger side will only go fully up with door opened. Both in about the 2.4 days vicinity...
