    Hi Everyone,
I need to replace the ignition wires on the Mondial QV. Stock ignition. I have searched the archives but I can't find a good answer to some basics.

    1. 7 mm or 8mm?
    2. Resistance or non-resistance?
    3. Best brand? (Taylor?)
    4. Where do I get the boots that cover the plug holes that go on the wires?

Thanks in advance. Let's get this info all in one thread!

    Hi Birdman

1, 7mm as standard, but Taylor are 8mm
    2, I think non resistance
3, defintely Magnecore, but Taylor 8mm are good (and came with our Xdi kits)
4, Nick Scianna purchased a load of rubber boots in bulk, I bought 8 for $15 each.

    Hope this helps. Regards Pete

Thanks Pete, your thread was the first one I found in my archive search, but since it was for an Electromotive, I wasn't sure if the various pieces parts were right for a stock ignition. I have an electromotive in my 308 as well, and I just used the wires Nick sent.

I'll contact Nick for the boots! Thanks for the tip.

Are you sure the factory wires are non-resistance???

I think you can just trim a bit back off the lead so it will push into the distributor cap

I know you have;) it was that thread you started about fitting yours that made me decide to get one.

No problem, ask him at the same time if they are resistance or non.

    Bird,

    Spark pug wires are fun!

8mm will fit in the stock caps, just lube them up with silicon grease first.

Yes, the factory wires are 0 OHM,,, the extenders and the plugs are your EMF resistance.....

    Boots?
I'll sell you (8) QV boots,,, for 5 bucks each. Free shipping.
I have about 18 laying around.

The stock F ignition wire isn't a high resistance carbon-based wire, but it also isn't a zero resistance simple solid conductor -- it's a spiral-wound fine wire with a nominal resistance of ~700 ohms/foot (and probably a non-zero inductance, but don't have any measurements for that).

    Mmmmm,
I don't know,,, maybe on your 1991, TR.
I have some old Beldin wire, , it is solid core tinned copper.
    (Help?)

I am building a 1981 308 2V, and I was going to use the tayor stuff.

Same on my ex-308 too (2 sets). Isn't the (modern 70's and later) stock F wire brand Cavis?

Your prior point is well-taken that's what's important is the total impedance of the wire+extender+spark plug system -- the output transistors firing the coil primary may suffer if you use a 0 ohm wire + 0 ohm extender + non-resistor plug, but doesn't mean that you need the exact stock wire to work OK with an electronic ignition.

Birdman -- If you know your old MondialQV wires are stock, they can't all be bad -- can you make resistance and length measurements and calculate a rough ohms/foot? Alternatively, if you just cut one up you should be able to determine the internal construction (single solid conductor, spiral-wound fine wire, etc.).

    Hey Steve,
I had read that they were spiral-wound RFI suppression wires someplace else, so thanks for the confirmation. The problem is that the wires on the car now are not stock either....so I don't want to just duplicate them....especially considering I'm having trouble with one!

Thanks all....let me see what I come up with at Autozone for a set I can modify. I'm just not a $200 spark plug wire guy!

Edwardo, thanks for the offer....let me see if I can recycle mine first...

Reuse your boots if there not damaged. Just remove the sheathing from the wire, then with a pair of needle nose pliers grab the terminal end and pull the wire out through the boot. Use a bit of lube to make it easy as pie. Terminals are readily available at auto parts suppliers..about 50 cents each
