Damn. As a kid, I had a bunch of toys of his vehicles. I even had one of those weird '70s toys, the car with a "launcher" that was wound up by hand. Hey I found a pic. I had the one on the left. The nose would extend to make it a dragster. Damn. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I remember seeing Robbie attempt a jump over a bunch of cars when I was a kid. Never fortunate enough to see Evel though. R.I.P.
A part of my childhood just died. I also had the various toys going up, saw his film Viva Knievel when it came out. RIP
Sad, but he had a pretty darned long life considering how he lived it (not saying at all that there is anything wrong w/ how he chose to live his life).
Evel was a cool role model for me as a kid, all busted up after one jump he still makes a speach Too Bad RIP he used to hang out at a retaurant called Hamada here in Vegas the old Hamada actually never did get to meet him in person
A moment to remember I grew up watching him on TV, and later in life he was our "other" celeberty in Clearwater. You could go to a car show and see Evel and Hulk hanging out...with Mr DuPont... funny little town for car guys. His Snake River Canyon Jump was part Sci-fi and part gutsy race car driver....like back in the old days, "I might live, I might die.. but lets go for it!" Wow! Chances are, boys of my generation said "Evel Knievel" more than any other name. Our parents probably did the same - I can still hear mine - "who do you think you are, Evel Knievel?" By 1975, he'd broken his bones 433 times over. The December 2007 issue of Maxim is worth getting for the Evel Knievel interview alone. He earned his final respects, and he knew his time was near. "This may be the last interview I ever do" ain't depressing, it's inspiring. Then again, Evel Knievel always was, and always will be inspiring, no matter the odds. Thank you for the memories and inspiration and hope, and may you Rest In Peace.
Not sure if it was worth it. I saw an interview with him recently, and he was taking over 100 different pills for his ailments and pain. RIP
Wow--I hadn't heard. He was one of my idols as well. I had read a few days ago where he just settled a dispute with Kanye West--something along the lines where both parties came to terms without dragging it through the press. But Evel was one of those guys I had always hoped to meet along the way. Lots of cool memories of a true original...RIP
I had a foggy memory of having seen a picture of Evel jumping over a speeding Ford GT-40, so I checked in my library. It turns out it was his "colleague", a man named Jack Stroh, at an event in Scottsdale, Arizona, in May 1968. Evel hurt himself earlier in the evening and was unable to perform, so Mr. Stroh was sent out to entertain the disappointed crowd. According to the article I found, he performed a standing high jump while the speeding Bill Watkins Ford GT-40 passed underneath. That's cool! Sorry for the non-Evel hijack.
