For a basic kitcar to me its very acceptable because your not investing a ton of money into the car.

But with you saying that a fiberglass body and a small-block chevy with that said let me ask you this, what do you think of the SS/C and the Mosler? I can have a list of cheesy "supercars" that are nothing more than a tube chassis, a bodykit and a small block chevy for go even if they are "Orginal" they are still very cheesy.

That can't be no replica? it looks to "Complete" but if not it looks good.

 

The "fiberglass and SBC" comment really applied to cheap cars like the Laser 917 and a $200 junkyard engine.

I don't know much about the SSC and Mosler. They appear to be well engineered, sound cars. Their engines are a far cry from bone-stock $200 junkyard engines.

Cheese is cheese, whether it's original cheese or cheese in the form of a copy.

I'm not dissing replicas and kit cars altogether. I'd love to have a Lola T70 replica that's indistinguishable from the original. I think there are some nice kit cars out there that are original designs. I'm really thinking about getting one of these, a Boattail Speedster from Deco Rides.

The illustration had chrome trim on it that I removed in Photoshop. I really like the paint scheme and colors. I think it would be cool with a nice, quiet 4 or 6cyl.

I understand where your coming from with the whole 200$ engine going into a POS I agree 100% with that you just can't coach that.

You talk so much about the laser 917 being a POS but if you sit down and look at the SSC and Mosler they are almost identical to each other you can even say they are high end turnkey kitcars, they use a GM engine that you could buy at the junkyard for 200$ call the LSX funny ain't it? How can you call them well engineered? I look at them and Laugh completely like yeah ill pay 200k for that thing? The Factory Five GTM is a better car than those two ever will be even if one can 250mph they are all still powered by a Corvette engine that if you look hard enough you can find there powerplants at junkyards for 200$ if your lucky.

I agree with you 100% I believe at of these new gen Supercars began their lives as kitcars that where modified into their orginal designs, again look at the SSC, they used to do Lamborghini replicas back in the day and where even the first to use a tube chassis. then they probably got creative and went all out with there ideas and well look what they have now.

Crafty - happy to see something about your car here after the Sunday Morning thread died.

I will PM you when I get back to HK at the end of the month. I have been hard at work on a little project that you will find interesting.

I have a kit car which has morphed more into a hot rod. I much enjoy being free of originality concerns and doing things to the car that I simply like.

A beautiful car is a beautiful car no matter how it came to be and the same for an ugly one...

I used to want a Countach kit car when I was a kid because a $35k kit car in the late 80s was seriously more attainable in my head than a real Lamborghini. However, finally being near a real Lamborghini Countach, and then being next to the very kit I was trying to seriously talk my dad into buying for my ("c'mon, you make $35k a year... we can just eat less!")... I have never been able to stomach the idea of driving one since. I have yet to see one replica Countach that is faithful to the lines.

Having said all of that... I do have the urge to get a Replica Cobra, just for the small roofless sports car fun it would give me... not to pass off as a historic peice. Some of these older Ferraris as well, seem like they'd be fun... but passing them off as the legit thing to me cheapens what would otherwise just be a nice set of lines on a fun cheap thing to pop out to the movies in... then you just become the poser type.

One other reason I could see for using a replica of a car you like, that is historic, high in value, and rare.... you can mod the hell out of it, put on a custom paint job no one in their right mind would ever do to an actual high value collectable... just, have FUN with it

Now, going back on what I said about never wanting to own or drive a Countach... I think I could justify it if I was going to use it to maybe make a replica of the original LP5000 That might be nice and half way worth it?

That's a real Countach

 

Parallel Designs out in the UK they make some pretty damn good kits. Thats pretty much what I want to is like take a countach and do some custom work to it but id rather do that to a fiero based kit than an orginal. Some replicas are pretty good even if they are fiero's wearing a lambo jacket iv'e though about doing on my fiero and using it as a daily driver since iam on the road alot.

I really want to do either an Ultima, GTM or possible Superformance GT-40 in the future.

If your going to go Cobra kit I highly suggest you check out superformance cobra replica's, Street beast or Factory Five racing cobras those my friend are the best cobra replicas money can buy.

 

That blue one is a monster don't let it fool you its packing a highly modified BMW V-12 and its been known to run 11's at any givin time. .

The red one at the begining is built by the same company who fabed the blue one.

As for the owner I also seen him rebuild that car from the ground up which caught fire and he managed to rebuild it completely. Very impressive though one of the better countach non sretched kits iv'e seen.

 

Prova Countach. Its based on an Ultima GTR chassis and they used to come with a fully built chevy V8 corvette engine and those cars used to perform like champs back then even in todays standard they could give any modren day exotic a run for their money depending on what they have done to it.

Back then they tested those replica's up against a real countach and a first gen diablo in kitcar magzine and the prova countach beat them both in all aspects except topend.

 

Testarossa+Fiero+Rice ideas=that?.

 

I'll bet the Provas beat the competition hands down on crappiness.... I'll bet none of the real ones came even close.
