My son has put an iPod Nano and a PSP on his Christmas list. I won't buy both, and I own a Nano, so I know about it. I know very little about the PSP and would like some feedback. I have a few questions:

    1. Does it have any internal memory? It doesn't look to me like it does. Does that mean that you have to carry a card for music, another for video, etc? Can you mix 'files' on a given card, ie; music and video?
    2. Do you have to buy movies from Sony? Can you download from other sources and put on a memory card? Does any other vendor make movies in this format?
    3. I assume you can save game progress as you play, do you have to have a memory card in place while you play?
    4. How does the wireless work, I assume pretty straight forward? Is the browser effective? I've used the interface a little on the PS3, and the PSP looks pretty much the same. Can I block websites so my 12 year old isn't surfing porn on his PSP?
    5. Anything I'm missing?

My daughter has had one for 2 years. I don't get the PSP, but I don't like looking at small screens like that.

I'm owned one, since it came out, so here goes...
    1. No internal memory. You have to buy a mem. card, which isn't too expensive. Around 20-40$ for 2gb. No, you don't have to have separate cards. Yes, you can "mix" files.
    2. You can buy UMD movies, and you can also put videos on the memory card. You can take your own videos, and covert them by using a program called PSP Video 9, which converts everything to PSP-vid. format.
    3. yes, you need to have a mem. card to save game progress. The new slimmer PSPs, some of them come with a 1gb card though
    4. WiFi works like normal wifi, except it is 802.11b instead of G. The browser is pretty decent for a handheld device. No, you can't block websites.
    5. If you're gonna get him a Mp3 player, don't get the Nano. They are many out there. Sandisk, Creative, and even the New Zune is awesome. After you get a PSP, all you need to buy is a memory card, (unless you get your son, one that comes with a mem. card). Then you have to buy him some games, but that's about it. The PSP is better, then the DS. I normally use my PSP to watch movies, and everything looks really good on that big screen.

I've got a similar request from my youngest daughter, but I think the iRiver Clix will be the ticket (at around $110). You can download free flash games to this mp3 player for free, and she doesn't need any famous name games, so it will do everything we need.
    Check it out:

If only I had an interpreter:

"AMOLED image quality with most enhanced clearness Clix offers untouchably utmost and clearest picture quality on the 2.2-inch screen with 320 X 240 resolution, backed by the technology of AMOLED, the world's highest-quality display introduced for the first time in the world. The clear screen you are going to newly experience will keep offering a big pleasure for the entire hours while controlling Clix. honestly all those out of apple mp3 players are confusing to use and push theyre own software which makes you move all your music to another thing... not as organized or well designed as apple products and they break more easily. The PSP is great for playing games on the go, but for music, you need to buy a card that can be worth more then the actual device to hold enough space, I have lost interest in my PSP though, I would recommend an iPod over it, just more usable everyday

I have PSP and I like it a lot. But I like the Nintendo DS a lot more. There is something about that touch screen on the DS that makes playing games more fun.

Talking about Nanos----One oldest son left his in pants pocket---I washed, dryed clothes and it was in there. Still works fine. My other son left his outside for a week---rain storm came through----still works greats---they will hold up for sure..

I'm not considering that the PSP would be a replacement for a Nano, it's just that I'm not buying him both. He already has a last generation Nano that works fine. The PSP just looks to me like a really complete system, you can do anything on it. I only wish it had built in memory, as I know that carrying around all the peripheral stuff can be a PITA.

I have a PSP. I have a 4gig mem card and I routinely put game images on that as well as movies and MP3s. I primarily use it on flights, keeps me entertained.

I just dusted it off for an upcoming flight.

I've also owned a PSP for some time and it's a great machine. The only thing that I don't like (when using it as a music player) is its size. It's just too big for certain things like listening to when working out. That being said, I'd like to know if anyone has heard of a car mount of the PSP. Something like a flexible arm that the PSP can mount to and then swivle or flex out of the way if I need to move it over?

Not really, just buy him the biggest size memory card, you want to, so he doesn't have to carry around anything, but a PSP, and his choice of games.
