As projects go, I think I like the silver car that ran better than this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ferrari-1981-FERRARI-400i-5-SPEED-BLACK-BLACK_W0QQitemZ320191194507QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item320191194507 Regards, Art S.
But you missed the best part of his description; "THIS CAR NEEDS THE ENGINE RE-ASSEMBLED, PASSENGER SEAT BOTTOM RECOVERED AND TOUCH UP A DIME SIZED PAINT CHIP.".....wait for it....here it comes.... "THAT IS IT" I can hear the conversaion now. "Sure Mr she's a great car. I'd trust it on any trip. No big deal, just put an Italian V-12 thats in pieces back together and she'll fire right up."
I wonder what happened to the heads? You guys think they weren't re-torqued and they warped? I remember seeing the old heads listed on Ebay but I didn't write down what was wrong with them. #40557 ZFFEB07B000040557 400i 5-speed Black/Black 1982 10/2001 for sale via Cosmopolitan Motors (WA) $29.5k 84k miles, 8/07 car located in (FL) with a (MT) title, currently having the engine rebuilt with used heads being installed,
At least that car is a 5-speed in a desirable color combo.....probably worth putting back together. On another note, did anyone ever find out what was wrong with the silver car? I remember back in the early 1990s, a friend of mine had a German-built Volkswagen Jetta GLI. An absolute tank of a car (in comparison with the Westmoreland, PA built Golfs and Rabbits).....and remember, it had the same injection on it as the 400i....Bosch CIS-E K-Jetronic. The only trouble it ever had was once it started to run REALLY rich. Low on power, black soot coming out of the tailpipe making the entire back of the car black....etc..etc... Seemed part of the wiring on the o2 sensor shorted together which told the computer to make the mixture that rich. We fixed that wiring and all was good. I have to say, that was my first impression when I saw the silver 400i 5-speed that was recently for sale, that the computer for K-Jet on that side of the motor had an o2 sensor wiring problem.
The seller of the silver car had it checked out at Ferrari of Denver and, if I recall correctly, he said at least 4 holes had serious issues - in other words, soon the silver car will look like the black one currently for sale on ebay If I can find the sellers comments, I'll post them. Regards, Art S.
Just putting out some feelers here. Realistically, assuming the paint on this car is decent, what is it worth with a 42,000 mile engine (different chassis number 1983 model) installed? Starts in a nano second, runs perfectly, sounds great, with no leaks. Just trying to figure out how to save another one. Thanks for any input. Lynn

Lynn, A nice, numbers matching car is worth between $25K and $35k, I would say that a not-numbers matching car is at the low end of this scale. However the black ebay car probobly has other issues - look at the exhaust. Unfortunately, once they are for sale in kit form you really should assume the worst. Regards, Art S. PS. Do you have a spare engine or a complete car?
Art: I bought the car from Peter at Forza discussed here: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=164533&highlight=forza
I say go for it! A brown on tan automatic gave it's life to save a black on black 5-speed. I'm all for that.
Lynn, Thanks, now I remember! What happened to the rest of the car you got from Peter? If you still have it, I'd take the tranny and front clip off of the ebay one and put it on your car; I think everything on yours, except the front corner is in better shape than the ebay car. Otherwise, I like your thinking. Actually, it might just be cheaper to buy a front clip and find a ZF 6 speed that would work and fix your car - besides, I actually like Marone better than black on 400s. Regards, Art S.
The car is still intact sitting in my garage. My plans were to use the engine and as of the chassis and other pieces as possible in my alloy body car. I am still considering that, but frankly would rather have a single cam instead of the twin cam just because of the clearance issues. Anyway, just thinking out loud and trying to get some input. Can't really tell what kind of shape the black car is in. No good pics of the body. Just thinking that its a shame for a 5 speed car to go by the wayside. Probably would not keep it for a driver, as I am really happy with my modified 745i turbo car as a daily driver. Here is a pic of the front of my alloy body. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Brian Did you make an offer on or inspect the black/black 5-speed that Dave told us about in Texas? It would appear to almost match your exacting requirements. Aidan
No, I didn't. It sounded great, and the black interior 5-speed is nice. But I just can't bring myself to do another black car. And I'm not a huge fan of the 400 in black...... And actually, I give crap to marrone, but actually it is a nice color. There was a maronne 328 on Ebay not too long ago that was beautiful, although I couldn't do that color myself. I'm a blue or grigio kind of person.....and yes, Dave has been so kind as to send me the list of all black interiored 5-speeds in the country.
