My 2 year old Queensland Heeler (Rigby..'Zippy' to some here!) is a VERY sweet dog and VERY protective of the family. She does pretty well around new people (Being a puppy treat whore, any one will become her friend if they give her a treat!). My problem is her aggressiveness with a couple of scenarios:

    1) The doorbell rings at the house and she goes nuts! She runs to the door and when I open it (UPS guy, mail person, etc. and the screen door will be closed), all she wants to do is bark like a mad dog and get at the person at the door. Not sure what she would do if I let her out!

    2) Rigby will be in the front passenger seat at a drive through. All calm and happy until I get to the window to pay for my coffee or whatever. At the window, it takes all I got to restrain her from flying out the window on my side to get to the person at the window.

    A) The above two are not good.
    B) I have a potential liability issue if she rips ito somebody.

For #1, my thinking is hiring a dog trainer to come over and knock on the door at my house. The trainer would be dressed in protective clothing (like police dog trainers) and I would open the door to see what Rigby does. If she goes after the trainer, the trainer would give her a good beating! This would HAVE TO do the trick to keep her from doing it again....Maybe I am wrong.

Looking for ALL advice please :)

    Pete,
I HIGHLY doubt you're going to find a reputable dog trainer that will pummel your dog in the scenario that you depicted. Besides, it would be an exercise in futility for all involved (you, dog and "trainer").

You need to teach your dog what behavior is acceptable and what is not. Get someone to help you try the following exercise:
    1. You're at home with Rigby and she's on leash
    2. Person comes to the door
    3. You walk to door with Rigby
    4. If she races ahead, stop. Do not let her proceed or pull you along. Wait until she stops pulling. Once she does, begin walking to the door again. Rinse and repeat as needed, but NEVER let her pull you to the door.
    5. Make her sit at the door
    6. Open door
    7. When she gets up (she will), put her back down. Rinse and repeat again, and again, and again
    8. When she's behaving, continue your interaction with person at door. Each time she breaks command, stop and put her back in a sitting position.
    9. When she's behaving, allow the person to greet Rigby. If she breaks command, stop and put her back before allowing the visitor to acknowledge her. DO NOT let your visitor acknowledge Rigby at any time when she is breaking command. Have that person turn his/her back to Rigby and ignore her until she is put back into seated position.
    10. Repeat this process over, and over, and over. It will take a while, but she'll get the hang of it.

You might also keep a small squirt bottle of water handy. Most dogs hate getting squirted, so you can use this as a tool to get her attention if needed.

I think you should accompany Zippy to dog training charm school. You'd probably learn a thing or two. :p

Let him watch the Dog Whisper or Animal Planet on Saturday mornings, my pup loves those shows. Mine learned how to catch a fresbee by watching Animal Planet! Now if she would only give me back the remote. :)

Thank you. I will try this. I like the water bottle idea, as I have never tried it. I thnk a lot of it gets down to her need to be around more people, in which I will take her on a couple of walks every day downtown (Using her muzzle on the first few trips). I aso need to get a bike and run her more. Her breed is to herd cows and goats, etc. Her hyperness may be a combination of being bored and the need to socialize with more people.

JOHNNY / Stef: YOU TWO BE NICE TO MY PUP-PUP!! :)

Peter, you're exactly right. Working dogs feel that they need to have a job or purpose in their daily lives. If you don't give them one, they'll take matters into their own hands and we're rarely pleased with the results.

You need to have a word that lets Zippy know the visitor is cool.
"Wax" would be an excellent word to use in such circumstances.

You need to have a word that lets Zippy know the visitor is uncool.
"Ellen" or "Postal" would be ungood.

If you say "Lamour" - all Zippy'll do is hump the visitor's leg.

Aww...I just find it absolutely hilarious that your adorable dog acts so viciously.

When I got my cat he was really mean. He would scratch the hell out of me, bite, growl, and hiss all the time. I always had scratch marks, some very deep. I would slap him or spray him with a water bottle, and yell at him when he was really bad and although it was mean, it worked. He'll still growl when he's pissed off, but the biting and scratching has ceased for the most part. Now he knows the meaning of the word "NO!" He's also become quite lovable and snuggles with me. :)

My lab has been doing this forever. I could train him to stop, but he'd slowly go back to doing it. He's now 9 years old, I've given up.

Yeah, upgrade her to the Reds:) Find a good trainer--Q-Heelers are herding dogs and they're also known for being loyal and protective. What you're trying to do is break her from behavior she was bred to do as opposed to learned behavior.

Sent them a letter last month, as they will be shooting in the San Francisco area during February. I'd probably have better luck posing as a Sous Chef and getting on Hells Kitchen!

I have tried out some of the Dog Whisper's technique's and they do work the most important factor is being consistent with the technique's meaning everyday they must be performed.

    Best of luck,
    Gregg
