    I have a 1984 512BBI with a relatively new Kevlar Clutch. I had the car sitting for about 8 hours today outside my garage, when I came back to it and attempted to pull the car back into the garage, I could not change gears, while the engine was running. I had to turn the car off switch gears then turn it back on. Is it relatively safe to assume my slave cylinder has went out? or is there an easy fix for this? Thanks

    If your clutch pedal feels normal then the cylinder is fine and its either the pilot bearing not letting the input shaft free-wheel or the new kevlar clutch is grabbing.

    Maybe fill in your profile and post your chassis number in the "just how many boxer owners" thread in this section - you'll have to do a search to find it though.

    With the car in gear and the engine running, is the car "moving" when you push in the clutch, or is that aspect still normal?

    If the car wants to "go" as soon as you hit the starter, then maybe the clutch slave/master cylinder has failed.

    You said "outside" but there's no location listed in your header. It's in the twenties here today, and that may be a factor if it's as cold there.

    At this point, I will let somebody with specific knowledge about your car take over...

    Thanks I submitted my Chassis #.....

    When in nuetral the car is normal, its just that I cant physically move the gear lever into 1st, reverse etc with the clutch pedal engaged. (when the engine is on) I can start the car in gear (with the clutch engaged) but then it locks me out from all the other gears (i.e. I can go from first to nuetral but not back to first or any other gear)

    I live in Orange County, California and the weather was cold today (by socal standards) maybe in the high 50's or so. The weird thing is on my 20/25 Rolls Royce the Clutch went out as well, so it could be a weather related symptom. Maybe the clutch plate never disengaged?

    Make sure there is brake fluid in the clutch master reservoir.

    Try pumping the clutch pedal a few times before trying to shift into gear.

    Thanks for the help.....This morning the car seemed to shift fine; I am just trying to figure out if this is a hint of some sort of component failure in the future? Any ideas or is this just an anomaly?

    I suspect that either the clutch master or slave cylinder is a little "marginal". Apparently you are not quite getting enough travel out of the clutch release mechanism to always get it done.

    You might try changing the fluid (I use Castrol GTLMA DOT4, NEVER SILICONE) and bleeding the system.

    One other possibility that occurred to me is that if you have floor mats they could be in the way of full pedal travel.

    In my experience it can swell some OEM seals. It is not recommended by most manufacturers.

    The advantages over conventional fluid are negligible if you maintain your system.

    When I have a car in my shop with silicone fluid I typically change it back to DOT4.
