LP400 Countach is built on a tubular space frame with a hand-formed 1mm aluminum skin. The first production run of about 50 cars are known as "Periscopa" because of the recessed channel in the roof that the rearview mirror sees through. These are the most sought after of the Countach. The term "Supercar" was coined with the introduction of the Miura. The F40 was still 20 years in the future. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I was just checking wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamborghini_Countach), supposedly the 400 had 157 units, but the 400"S"added another 237 units and was "a better car", so I think the downside to the countach is they made too many iteratations of the same car (like so many manufacturer's do). The 500s had no bodywork changes, and added another 321 units. So at what point do you add these up into 1 set of units? I dont see breaking a model out because of a review mirror? Sorry if I got that wrong. In contrast all F40s were all the same, sure there were euro models and US models, but within that they were all the same, there wasn't an F40 "S" that was faster or better handling.
The F40 is an all-time favorite of mine and I hope to own one in the future BUT the Countach (especially the LP400S) is one notch higher on my list. When you see an LP400S S1 sitting next to an F40, my eyes are drawn to the Countach. No doubt the F40 is better built, much faster and absolutely awesome but in terms of looks, that goes to the LP400S. Maybe "super car", but not "supercar" if you ask me. IMO a supercar has to break 200 MPH, Muira didn't, and be a competent track car, the Muira was not. Don't get me wrong, the Muira is a classic. But it is not a "supercar".
"It's spelled "Raymond Luxury-Ya-ch-t," but it's pronounced THROAT WOBBLER MANGROVE!" ...The term was coined with/for the Miura, your fetishes be damned.
Maybe the term was coined. But it's meaning has changed. The Miura is not a supercar if you ask me. Sorry fan boys.
Agree/Disagree/Agree. Actually, the Ferrari 288 GTO got that label from the motoring press in the mid-1980s. So you're both wrong! If you consider the era, though, the Miura was even more outrageous than the later Countach. When my 328 went up to Monterey, it was on a truck with two Miuras and loaded up for the return trip while I was there. They are mindblowing cars even now. For the late 1960s, I can't even imagine... I'd certainly agree that the original LP400 Countach is rarer, and far more desirable than what came later (with the wings, flares and other pimp accessories).
Good point about the 288 GTO! I guess in my mind a big aspect of being a supercar is hitting 200 MPH, which is why I forget that car. What did the 288 GTO hit? 185 MPH right? As for the Countach's, I actually PREFER them with the wing.
Interesting opinion. A supercar has to break the 200MPH barrier. I could see that valid now, but you have to bear in mind that technology is far more advanced now when the industry is just starting to explore >200MPH. Personally I think it's a little more accurate to say it should be a car ahead of it's time in terms of performance rather than set a specific number as a benchmark because times do change.
My opinion is that what's considered 'super' today, may look much less super in 20years. So my criteria for considering a car a supercar is that it's 'super' at the time it was built, even if it doesn't match up with the best today. So with that criteria, a Miura certainly qualifies as a supercar, and so does an lp400, a 288GTO, and an F40. IE, if it ever would be considered a supercar, it will always remain a supercar, to me.
Interesting discussion about supercars on Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supercar Oddly enough, the term supercar was originally coined to describe the Miura.
Just a few tidbits of info... LP 400 = 150 units, but not all were Periscopa cars, had thin wheels no body flares/spoilers. LP 400S = Added wheel flares and spoilers, wide rear wheels and all new suspension LP 500S = Upgraded to 5L engine from the previous 4L LP 500QV = 4 valve engine, up from 2, increased engine CC again. 25th Anniv = New body styling, interior, suspension for Pzeros. You can dig up these, and other facts (plenty of) at www.lambocars.com ... which is a pretty thorough archive of info on EVERYTHING Lamborghini!
