$75,000 1980 308 GTBI???

We discussed last wk, (smile), but, they wanted 75 for it, I remember. Hey, it's a 1980, so consider that. Real nice look, gotta admit. But 75,000???

I hope it sells. Could bring up the values of all our cars. What do you think a car like that is really worth? $40k?

 

You know this was some guy who was looking at the prices of vintage Ferraris (even back then) and sacrificed having any fun with the car for the last 30 years with the thinking that if he just keeps the car cherry it would be worth a million dollars in 30 years..... Ooops.

Yes and no, the old saying that I hate says its worth what someone will pay for it. I dont agree with that saying but some do. The question is do you want a very clean original 308 or a worn out one that will cost more than $75K to bring up to the level of the one here? More and more as time goes on, the choice will be pay through the nose for a great 308 or live with a "typical" aging one with personal touches and shabby repairs that will always be lacking. I think this 308 is worth the asking price.

That car belongs at Barrett Jackson in Jan. He may even get $75k for it there. They love garage queens.
Too bad it's not registered to go.

I was just reading a blurb in Automobile about an old Oldsmobile that went for over $1MM. They talked about collectors shifting their focus from over restored examples to more untouched examples. Wont apply here, but wonder how it will apply elsewhere???

Engine bay looks better in person. The guy washed the car for the photos and the water spots on coolant tank are from that. The interior up close and in person is amazing.

 

+1 Maybe the odometer broke on this one like it did on most of the others.

 

Maybe if it was fiberglass euro-spec and in left hand drive... Its worth what the market will pay for it. I don't see it catching more than $35K on a good day... That said, it is an extremely clean GTB so if someone has been looking for a completely unmolested car (see that license plate frame Tommy?) then this is the car to buy from what I see.

 

This car was on ebay some time ago maybe 2 yrs ago
they wanted 40k then and did not get it so raise the price
and use the same pics that will work.

Barrett Jackson is the ONLY place that could reach near $70k for that car.
Remember last year an 85' Euro 308gts in ok condition (not great, wrong wheels, wrong turn signal lenses, oil filter was 2 years old etc ) went for $52k + fees. It also had about 10x the mileage. (22k) -(grey market car takes about a 15%-20% hit in price according to their announcer).

 

Maybe not in the US marketplace. In others, I'd say yes.
Think of what you won't need to do, if the car was laid up properly. If you want the genuine article, this is good. No need to clean up after someone else's mess.

On the other hand, the same discussion applies here, that also applies to any very low mileage car. You may have to do a lot of rubber replacement, and who knows what else. It's a bit of a risk on that side.

It could be the quality of the pic, but one thing in the engine bay would worry me. The fuel lines are cad-plated, these look grey to me. What's up with that?

$70K, seems really unrealistic. Even if the car has low mileage and is cosemetically in great shape, it seems most 308 buyers would rather have an early carb car or a QV. The GTBi/GTSi is a nice car but based on its performance/smog equipment issues, its unlikely to meet, much less surpass the values of top notch QVs.

And ... an FChat-er (jjay) just sold a 7K(?)-mile 328 for $75K or so in a private sale.

 

$70,000 for one low mile car....not likely, maybe $40,000

If I had $70,000 burning a hole in my pocket and had to have a 308, I would but a pair of 50,000 mile late production QV's, one GTS and a GTB
