He doesn't look too comfortable sitting in that Quite upright, wheel way down between the legs. This guy doesn't look like he got the position either; http://youtube.com/watch?v=eAXCgyHX218 So - is it hard to fit into the Miura properly? Do you have to be small to be comfortable? Richard Hammond seems fine; http://youtube.com/watch?v=6VeKcXI5jdo
...more important: nobody, absolutley N O B O D Y, gives attention to the red Ferrari 512 BB! Hah! Ciao! Walter
The steering column can be adjusted but its a wrench job. Im 6'3' and Im SOOO comfortable in my Miura SV. You have to set it up... Joe www.joesackey.com
I think Hammond is sized like an Italian. There's actually plenty of room if you take the stock seat out and make a custom seat which doesn't move your butt so far forward. Or just sit on the floorpan, I suppose. I think the key is to not be too wide, or too round.
Some have simply removed the rails and fixed the seat gaining almost an inch. In a car like the Miura, the difference of an inch is a LOT and can be the diffrence between comfort or not. Joe www.joesackey.com
I (being 6 foot 3) always found that after a long distance it gets you in the small of the back but the Miura is otherwise very comfortable. So I took to carrying a small rolled up towel (stored down the side of the seat) which was great for lumbar support. And for drying off the inevitable leaks when it rains in Europe. Miura side windows never seem to be water-proof. Never found a problem on head room. Piet
The towel is an excellent idea, although I am obviously not driving my Miura for distances long enough! I agree if the 6' 3" guys are comfortablem most cant complain... The longest I have gone in one stretch in a (previous) Miura SV was 375 miles in one day, in a weekend when we did a total of 1,000 miles. Pure pleasure. Joe www.joesackey.com
Check my website www.joesackey.com and click on the Japanese flag (or the French one for that matter). I cant understand a word of what they are talking about and it is all my wife and my site manager's fault... Joe
I'm not 6 ft. 3 in. but I find the car to be fairly comfortable for short or long periods (drove mine to Monterey a couple of years ago, 500 miles up, 500 miles back, no significant comfort issues [keep in mind these aren't Cadillac's either]). My main complaint is the lack of lateral support of the seats. So around the twisties, it is a royal pain to keep in place. Interesting Bobileff's upholster tells me that the seats on my very early P400 are wider than S and SV seats he has done (he used mine as a go-by when he was doing a P400 and he could not use his existing SV patterns). I have no idea when in the run this changed. Perhaps you guys with S and SV's don't have this lateral support issue as a result (or maybe I just need to eat more and have more beer to make me wider?). Alberto
About a quarter of all Miuras built originally had cloth/fabric seat inserts which were later replaced with leather. On 4884 during the restoration we went back to the original cloth seat inserts and at last I have a Miura that I feel 'planted' in when going round corners quickly. Joe www.joesackey.com
I believe 1021 originally came with the basket weave middle in vinyl. They might have provided slightly more friction than the current leather, but certainly less than your cloth inserts. All leather also makes you sweat like a swine. All around, your middle inserts are a better set up. Alberto
Since I am a non-smoker and smoking is not allowed in the cabin of my Miura SV, I think the cloth inserts will survive. I had Luis source an extra roll in case my kids let me down! So far so good... Joe www.joesackey.com
Loui has told me it is the same cloth used in same vintage BMW's. He's found some source for remnants, and was looking into having them remade. Not sure where that stands. I would imagine that the demand might be high given the BMW connection, but on the other hand, how many BMW's are being restored back to original? Alberto
It used to reside at Foreign Auto Wrecking (Rudi Klein's Los Angeles yard complete with un-freindly rottweilers), then one day in 1987 it was gone... Joe www.joesackey.com
