Umm, I'd kinda forgotten about that little cyanoacrylate drawback. All the places where I've glued o-rings has either been dry, like the belt, or else sealing oil.

Might still work tho, once the o-ring is in place & compressed, I'd think that the compression of the rest of the o-ring would hold the ends butted tightly against each other, esp. with a dab of 518 or RTV around the glued joint. Would want to prototype it & test for awhile tho before trying it on my V12 engine.

Might be worth contacting the o-ring stock mfg. tech support to see what they recommend for coolant sealing apps.

It's been a few years since I built any air-cooled VW motors but I recall that only the early motors (36hp) used the copper rings. All the ones I built were built without head gaskets.

    Mark,

Did you ever have time to stop and analize the dream/nightmare that led to this project?

I have yet to find my box of loose liners (shop cleaned out this summer and all spare parts put in a storage trailer) but there is a block on the shelf that has a full compliment that has to come out. It is on the top shelf of a 15' pallet rack being blocked by F40 body work. The 40 is going together today so I will pull a liner tomorrow AM and get it going your way.

If I had known you were starting this project I would have bought stock in Alcoa and Airgas... Too late now.

I thought you might like that one. Hopefully tonight's will be even better....I'm planning to start cutting the ends of the heads to get that stupid cover on.

Just one last call to double check something. Have you physically tried flipping the heads around? Left on the right, right on the left, intakes toward the center, with the cam drive ends to the rear??? I was just hoping for you that the back ends of the heads might be closer to the block ends or in some way make it easier to get the chain cover to fit. You Have already made the block so it wont fit anything else, I was just trying to keep you from doing it to the heads??? :)

Mark, I must say I am truly impressed. While I am not a great welder myself, I have felt for years that a lot of these types of alterations were possible, its just that no one these days seems to have the guts to try. Sometimes you see facinating things in the aircraft field, but virtually never in this arena. I really hope this all comes together, it should be fantastic. You do know of course that your going to have to do a "Newman" on the rest of the car? You cant drop that masterpiece in without dolling up the rest of it, people are going to want to put that car in magazines when your done.

In the pictures I found of the gasket sets, it sure looked like they came with copper rings, but I think the sets are pretty universal, use what you needs I guess. But I didn't want to have to buy 3 complete gasket sets at $14.95 each so I kept looking and found a place that listed the ring separate...I hope I orded the right parts.

    Dave,
I sure appreciate the loner cylinder! Don’t worry about getting it right out though, it looks like I’ll tied up on the timing cover for a day or 2……

I went and measured the heads when you mentioned flipping them before. They are very symmetrical, so the only thing flipping then would do is make a bit more work with the cams among other things.

As for doing a “Newman”, Paul is doing a beautiful job on his car and as much as I would love for mine to look even ½ as good, that is a skill set I simply do not have. I’m going to have to live with a driver. I keep saying I'm going to get it painted when the engine is done, but I keep end up starting a new engine every time the engine is done....maybe after this one :)

    Hey Mark,
I am catching up on this thread today and I have a few comments that relate to the last few pages. None of which will be helpful at all to you.

    1. You are a madman. (That's what we love about you!)
    2. Your son is adorable.
    3. I'm jealous of your awesome milling machine.
    4. Did I mention you are a madman?

I vote that we change Mark's username to Madman.

It's turning into quite the frankenferrari:

Starts as a US 308QV then slowly......
    Euro rear bumper
    GTO front valance
    Euro GTO front bumper
    Euro GTO front turn signals
308 replica grill to fit the GTO valance
348 seats (I think they are going to go)
    550 wheels
Porsche cayenne 6 piston front calipers (oh the shame)
Porsch 944 front caliper on the rear (oh, even more shame)
chevy radiator (oh, that's just wrong)
    400i lower end
    TR heads
    348 liners
    Suzuki throttlebodies

At least there are no honda parts on it :)

But you won't get to see all the forged…..I mean documents showing it to be a factory original 308 with the ultra rare V12 308 option :)

I got my vw heads gaskets today.....which are actually head shims, made of aluminum and not particularly useful :(

    Back to searching.

Try Cooper rings, not copper. Nitrogen filled, circular cross sectional design on some and circular with micro open pots facing the combustion chamber on another design I have used. Both were CanAm race car applications.
