I hope they do hit the 100K mark. I own one, the last thing I would want is for it to stay "cheap".

I only started this thread after my 10 year ownership anniversary back in Sept. ALL it was was an observation of they way things are, not my opinion on how they should be. My only disagreement was with the "value" aspect after a restoration. If someone dumps $60,000 in a $20,000 car (any car - including a 308) it doesn't mean it's automatically an $80,000 car. It is whatever the market dictates. That's not my rule, it's the rule/law/whatever of a free market society. The Scirocco was an example only.

Things seem to have been changing (values on the rise) since this thread took off. I wonder if I helped things along...?:)

    but anyway...

Clearly the Cosgrove Effect seems to have been in play recently. Now I wonder if I need to hire armed guards for my car. :(

Yeah, you...the guy that thinks a restored 308 is still worth 50K ;)

    Heres an oxymoron :D:D:D

I still love ya though ;)

I hope the values continue to rise but really all I'm truly happy about is that I bought one when I could afford it because I never intend to sell. :) Of course the bad part of these cars rising in value is that the parts will probably increase in value too so they will be more costly to maintain.

It's all quite relative to where on this earth you live.

Of course the US got the bulk of the production, and the attitude of the 'average' American first owner (and often subsequent owners) to a motorcar doesn't do much for the condition of that car. It causes for a wide spread in the condition of vehicles, where some are exquisit, but most are just average or less than that.

In other countries with less disposable income, the purchase of a new 3X8 was, in most cases, much more of a landmark for the owner, and cars were generally taken care of much better. The 'stock' of 3X8's, though smaller in numbers, is often of a much higher standard because of this.

In South Africa, for instance, it is no exception to see a great 328 GTS change hands for over USD 100K, and 308's go as far as 70.000K when in real good condition, and a lot of cars are. And they don't need to have an exceptionally low mileage for that either.

An 'average' 308 GTS will still weigh in at around 50K, but then, you pay that for a C-class or 3-series Bimmer as well.

A year ago these prices were 15-20% lower.

Glad I got mine when I could!

you know what, as difficult as it it is to stay with Ric as he jumps all over the place, at the end of the day he is only somewhat completely off the mark. he will have to restore his car someday, just like everyone else does...and he'll be completely upside down, just like everyone else is. he'll get a lot more than we will and only feel as silly as we do. big deal...you only live once and you can't take it with you. if you leave those that you cherish better off than you were, than the rest is up to them. after all, you don't do them any favours if you spoil them too much. maybe it is better to leave them a nice Ferrari than a 1/4 mil. who knows ? i would have been ok with that.

A nice TR sold yesterday for $46,000.I see buyer resistance at anything over cheap for all the Cars no matter the model. The obvious stated, its pretty great that 308s are stong enough to make near TR money. When they make F40 money Im out.

As much as I love the 3x8 and will own another one again someday, I don't think there is a chance that they will be worth $100k in the next 20 years. When they are selling on Ebay for $20k or less (go check the Completed listings), I just don't see it. Of course there will be the museum-esque model that will. Like the one sold last month. But I just don't see the car fetching 100k when there are just SO many of them out there.

For that to happen, the 308 would have to pass the 360 in price. I don't see that EVER happening. Not in 20 years for sure. Our age-demographic would never let that happen. I don't think people could get it in their heads that a 308 is actually worth more.

I could see it passing the 348 and 355 in price just due to the service requirements of each. But not the 360 as the services (I am referring to the major) costs about the same.

A 246 with a FIAT engine is worth more than a 360 if its nice, not perfect, just nice. Not all 308's will be worth $100K just like not all dinos are worth more than a 360, its CONDITION that determines the price. How many concours correct 308s are on the market? none. How many fully restored 308's are on the market? none. How many dead 308's are on the market? piles and piles, what colour do you want.

The 308 will pass the 360 in price. I have no doubt about it, and I don't think it will take 20 years, or possibly even 10. There are 18,000 360s out there, maybe 7,000 328s, maybe 4,000 308 QVs, and the 360's plusses (performance, technology and new-ness) will wane over time, while the 308s plusses (iconic looks, ease of maintenance) will continue to become more important.

The Dino 246 is not a rare car in asbolute numbers. I believe several thousand were made, which puts it somewhere near 308 QV territory, and multiples of the 'glass 308s. It's just older, and was unloved for a while so the fleet deteriorated. That's precisely what's happening with 308s now -- they're getting partial resprays, re-dyed interiors, half-assed repairs, etc. If you want a mint '89 328 red/tan, those are available from time to time. Anything else in true collector condtion -- good luck.

+1. Sheehan just listed a great one, without tools, at $215K.

I challenge all of the "308's are too common" crowd to find a 308 with great body/paint, good engine/compression, a suspension that actually works and an interior that doesn't look like it was redone with Krylon.

I know of exactly one for sale right now that could almost qualify -- it just had $20K+ worth of mechanical work done. If you find a car like that on eBay for $20K, PM me.

Me and you are starting to sound like a broken record. :D:D

I just seen one of those supposed 308s gtsi for 28K that sold....i couldnt even tell you where to start...the front head light louvers were painted black (to make it look like a QV)...the paint on louvers was not only a mess, it messed certain sections part of the hood...i guess if you look at the car from 12 feet away, it looks like a shinny red ferrari...just not one i would brag about ;)......PARTS CAR in my book.

    Merry Xmas Jon.

I have to disagree here, in some markets outside the US top end 3*8s are getting close to bottom end 360s already. Ebay is not the real market for these cars either. In a few years in my opinion most decent cars will have been exported to markets that appreiciate them more and are willing to pay.

Your right Ebay is not the real market, Latest issue of Cavallino -77-79 Steel GTB's low end 35K, High 40K here. I tend to go with Cavallino over Ebay.

No power steering though. If you still have hair gel on your hands from your 355 drive, it can be a handful to steer. :)

Ah, now I see. The 3X8's are so cheap on the North American continent because you are all spoilt by years of PAS and there are no real MEN left who can actually drive them?

My wife, who is 5 ft1" has no problem at all

Suggest you all take the PAS-belts of you daily-driver luxo-barges and get back into shape:)
