hoping someone more clueful than i can shed some light on this topic.

i've wanted to get myself a greasecar for a while now. i watch the MB 350 SDL market, but they're tough cars to come by in good condition these days.

i love my jeep (2001 grand cherokee limited) - especially when it snows. but the 287 V8 mileage, well, sucks doggy doo doo, not to put too fine a point on it!

so i started thinking today: instead of ditching my jeep (only 65K miles on it), why not pull the 287 V8 block, sell it, and drop a diesel block in there? then i can fit a waste vegetable oil system to it! easier said than done, i imagine, hence my getting-started questions.

    (a) anybody here know a jeep dealer who could hook me up with a new 3.0L 6 cyl diesel block? the 2008 JGC's have an optional diesel engine now (fwiw - different model JGC).

    (b) anybody have suggestions on alternative sources for quality diesel engines blocks? i can't figure out where to start googling (that is, i've had no success thus far).

    (c) anybody have experience with any of the online forums regarding this stuff? i found a bunch of them, but they all seem messy.

    tia,
    doody.

I'm afraid that I can't help with the sourcing of a diesel engine, but I would caution you to be careful about running veggie oil in the car. Not for any mechanical reasons, but because thus far veggie oil isn't taxed (fuel taxes) and is therefore technically illegal for a person to burn in a vehicle (with some exceptions). You may already be fully aware of this (and have a solution), but thought it would be worth mentioning just the same.

    Sounds like a fun project.

Why not just get a Liberty Diesel?

The Air Force used CJ-7's with diesel engines for aircraft tugs in the 80's(?) and they can currently be had for a song. If you're into that.

EDIT: Turns out they were called CJ-10a/CJ10a's and have a 6cyl Diesel.
EDIT2: It is a Nissan SD-33 diesel motor however.
