I saw this TR on ebay and wanted to know if anyone knows this car: (Auction # 220184951105). http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ferrari-1987-FERRARI-1987-FERRRAI-TESTAROSSA-PRISTINE-CONDITION_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6212QQihZ012QQitemZ220184951105QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW I was going to pay a visit to the dealer and have a look for myself, but any information that I could obtain beforehand would be very helpful. - Merry Christmas. -Eric
I don't know anything about the one your asking for, but this one is mine: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=010&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&viewitem=&item=200188068293&rd=1 Contact me with any questions.
The average: 1. If I was to keep the car, I would do a major service in the next year. 2. While doing a major, I would also splurge on a new clutch. 3. The tires are OK, but not exactly top technology. The undetermined: 1. With all the performance exhaust and tuning, I seriously doubt that it would pass emissions. 2. The car has a variety of dings, typical of a 20 year old aluminum car. I had planned for a full body massage in the future. 3. The interior needs a sprucing up. I would reskin the seats, and also replace the center console where once a cellular phone was installed, and maybe even throw some new carpet in. 4. The wheels should be repainted. 5. There is no radio. 6. The fog lights may not work. 7. The tachometer is flaky. Otherwise this is a pick up and drive home car. I have describe this car to the best of my ability. Please verify anything important to you, independently. The bad news $500 for a radio Repaint wheels $800? Tachometer flakey $?,???.?? Fog lights don't work $????.$$ reskin seats and center console and carpet $8,000.00 dings and full body massage $10,000 - $15,000 Major service with clutch $13,000 Can't pass emissions $?,????.?? These things do add up on a Testarossa, at least the ad is honest.
Yes SPARTA49 : I too was a bit stirred up by the seller's description of the car. I agree with your assesement. On the other hand, it's refreshing that the seller was being very open and honest about the condition of the car. I studied the pics and the car looks "average" for the year and miles, no surprises that I could spot. But it is very subjective just studying pics. The upgraded differential is a very big PLUS and makes me wonder why it had to be done? I doubt it was done as a preventive measure. The sad thing is, how could a perspective buyer tell that the diff is upgraded? Maybe some sealant around the side of the case? Oh and that screwy tachometer....what could that be? Oh...and I like the line "fog lights "may not" work !!! Either they do or they don't. I wouldn't mind seeing this car in person, just to get a true idea of it's condition.
If you guys would like any hi-res pics, please ask. I'll email them if you're interested in buying. Preventive it is: As far as the Diff, I've got the old one (good as new) if you'd like to see it, as well as pics of the job being performed, and prussian blue imprint pics of the crown after setting. I was intenting to keep the car for eternity, but things for me have changed a bit. Fog lights once worked, but no longer. I should have put it that way, sorry about the confusion, but I believe this may be a very simple problem to fix. You guys shoud take a look at the remote fuse panel pics, I may consider making additional units, if time permits. The car run so much better since the upgrade.
It is refreshing to hear about the actual condition of the car, when the car is less than A1 condition. Most sellers on eBay, end up giving a worthless general history lesson on the model of the car offered for sale. The history lesson, is usually followed by the sure-thing future investment potential, of the car being listed. Pics ? Some sellers list 20+ pics, and simply miss a few places under the hood and other key areas. It is a good idea to itemize, the negative aspects of the listing.
About the Tach, it works, but I think it may be underestimating the revs. See the youtube attachment on the ad. I think I have all the bits to return this car to smog standards, but I was hoping to keep them in stock. Anyone is welcomed to inspect the car. It is in St.Petersburg, FL 33712. You may want to hurry, as I am having a pretty serious case of seller remorse.
+1 I think he may have been a little harder on the car in the description then he should be, still at 50K - 55K with the differential done is not a bad price, I wuold have fixed the fog lights and the tach before selling just to eliminate those from the list of unknowns, The paint didn't look that bad from the pics.
I have posted additional pics and video to http://s249.photobucket.com/albums/gg225/rebirthauto/ Also, concerning the last major, it was performed by the previous owner in the summer of 2004 with around 32K on the clock (ie. 3.5K miles ago!). There are many different opinions concerning the service intervals, ferrari says 3 years, most prudent owners think 5 years, and some believe that 7+ years is the way to go. Additionally, the previous owner addressed the water pump during the last major. I have supporting receipts.
I have added pictures of the diff. replacement to http://s249.photobucket.com/albums/gg225/rebirthauto/
Great Pictures!! I must admit...after reading everything and stuff...this car is REALLY starting to grow on me. It will make a good, solid, dependable car for somebody. Rebirthauto: I wish you all the best on your sale.....
I think this is a good ad for the car. Any 20yr old car will need work, it just depends on what at what level and what you're going to do with it. I'm a driver, so this shows up as a good candidate on my radar screen, especially since the owner has been honest. I really think this would be a great driver for someone. Just my opinion. Jim
Can you tell us anything about the previous owner you bought from? Dealer or private? Did they maintain well or ? Why did they sell? The pic of the odometer, the speedo reads 10 mph. Was the car not parked when the pic was taken, or is the speedo flaky? What is the remaining tire life left? Which owner put "Centennial Interceptor" budget brand tires on her? Is there catalytic convertor? What do you mean by the car has been "tuned"? Performance mods beyond the exhaust? Have you investigated the estimated cost to repair the tach & fog lites? The passenger side of the cubby console is damaged from the previous cell phone mount? No holes/rips/cigarette burns in the carpet or seats?
1. Previous Owner was an auto trim supplier, he has I would guess upward of 30 cars, and he maintained it well (for the 1200 miles he put on the clock), but he never addressed the fuse panel, so the car never ran well for him ence the sale of it. He is the one who put in the performance exhaust which, he says, exacerbated the car running issues, which in turn lead him to bring the TR to a (quite reputable) local shop for a look over. The shop then dialed in a what they called "european" state of tune. A few weeks later, the owner showed the car at the "Festivals of Speed" in St.Petersburg, and that is when I bought the car. I sent the car out for a PPI at the same shop they advised me of the impending fuse panel meltdown, but otherwise gave the car a clean bill of health. Honestly, the car idled as if it was on a big lumpy cam and also had about every other electrical gadget working part time. That is why I entreprised in redesigning the electrical system, which in turn solved every major glitch the car had, and made it run as smooth as pie. 2. The speedo runs fine, I guess the car sitting still looks like it going at least 10mph, right. Seriously, it will not fall below 10, but works perfectly. The car was actually ideling for the pics by the water. 3. Tires: Nobody will admit to buying this choice brand, I'm sure Centennial themselves would be surprised to find such good product placement. I had planned to change these tires, but they do have a broad majority of their useful left. 4. Catalytics are on the car, but I have not verified their content. The car is a ground shaker, and I'll go out on a limb and say that it almost sounds like it is on straight pipes. 5. Tachometer i'd say is about $345. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-OEM-FERRARI-TESTAROSSA-TACHOMETER_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118QQcategoryZ33678QQihZ005QQitemZ8003438781QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V 6. Fog Lights: I believe the problem might be a faulty switch. 7. Cell phone install did damage the console, but I was lucky enough to rescue the unit from the previous owner for a possible reinstallation, how 1987 would it be. I have a 1972 Rolls with a correct rotary dial cell phone installed in it, it is actually really neat to see! 8. Interior: Car had new carpet put in just before my purchasing it; I was planning to have the carpet adjusted in the trunk to better fit around the new fuse box. Most of the dash was reskined. No burn marks anywhere i have seen, but the seat bottom leather is pulling enough to bother me. The driver seat is showing the usual wear at the side restraint. I therefore would have them reskinned in time, while doing that I'd give every part not previously attended a good sprucing up.
+1 If I could move to a Testarossa at this point in time this one would be on my radar as well. My favorite exterior color on any year TR. Great job on the fuse upgrade rebirthauto! Enjoyed the youtube clip as well.
I would be interested, if you have the time. Please contact me, if you can do this some time in the future.
I can machine another billet cover and source out the parts rather easily, if you are comfortable with the wiring end. Or if you are a (St.Petersburg, FL) local, then I may be coerced into putting it in for you. I can also take additional pics to better document the install, before the car sells. If you're in a hurry, I've got unit one of one available for sale... with a car.
Jim Lyons from the SportCar Company is a great guy to deal with. He has a very good reputation. Good luck. Gene
