regarding the Messina picture, we think it could be either 0524M or 0570M. the Italian sport newspaper we have that covered that race states several times that the winning car driven by Castellotti/Trintignant was in the 3 liter class, not 3.5 or 2.
It cannot be 0560 which had two small tailfins, one on each rear fender.

As for engine swapping, the factory did this w/ the 4-cylinder cars with mind-numbing regularity - so much so that we simply do not know what to call certain cars; Mondials or Monzas. 0562 is an example.

speaking of 0562, the picture of the wreck above is NOT 0562/Ascari. . .

I have plenty old pics of 0570M. The general shape looks exactly the same than the Messina car. Look in particular the nose and the sides very high and opened...

from the Pebble Beach Road Races april 22,1956.

    no.26 D was Sterling Edwards,
    24 D was Carroll Shelby ,
    276 was Ernie McAfee and
no.2 C with Phil Hill on the steering wheel.

It was a sad day because Ernie lost his life on lap 26.......

I am thinking it might be 121LM #0558. This car was driven by Castelotti earlier in the year at the Miglia Mille in 55. Hood is clearly 121 in the photo that Nathan posted although vent on top of right fender is not there. 0570 has a vent at the base of the windsheild surround. Surround is steeper on 570 as well. 0570 did not show up as a team car until late in 1955. Just a guess.

    Paul's photo in #3301 is #0570

For the Monza crash photo I know Gendebien crashed a 750 Monza at the Tourist Trophy Dunrod.
I know that circuit had alot of trees and brush and one of the cars was number #5.He crashed it during practice.

So it was Olivier Gendebien testing at the Tourist Trophy at the Dunrod circuit Ireland on September 16-17th 1955 in a works 750 Monza??He ended up in the hospital and did not start the race.(his would be first for the Ferrari team)

Thats the best guess I can make.

Ferrari records #4 (Maglioli/Gendebien) as 0570MD and #6 (Castellotti/Trintignant) as 0578MD... Both were 3-litre of course. It is also known that 0578MD was later re-identified as 0584M.

Some mysteries remain in this area too.

0524 was badly crashed by De Oliveira at Porto a month before. On 0570, see post 3312.

Indeed these engine-swappings are a nightmare and calling some Ferraris by the unit capacity is too often misleading. Same for 857S: 3.5 engines were very seldon used in 1955. But there is a common point on all these 1955 4-cylinder cars: their chassis type: Tipo 510.

My guess on Gendebien's crashed car at Dundrod is 0584M.

    John von Neumann's 500 Mondial is 0438, not 0448.

    0570 or 0578 but clearly a 857 S with 3 liters engine.

    Thanks
