Do you have more pictures of the exhaust tips on this Miura? Do you know for sure if they are original? They appear to be the round type used on the prototype(s). I've gotten conflicting information about the use of these round tips on the early cars. My belief is/was that only the proto had them. As usual, I am open to being proven wrong.

    Thanks for your help.

    Bernie,

This stunning Miura belongs to Irishman Sean G who purchased it new in 1968 and still owns it! He is one of about a dozen Miura owners who purchased their cars new and have hung on to them.

    Colin Clarke restored this one.

    Phillipe,

In order to spare the alleged letter-writer and the person who allegedly requested the letter from further controversy, I will not comment on it on a public forum. Send me an e-mail and I will privately tell you what the letter is worth.

    Alberto,

The circular units that you see affixed to the rear of 3589 are in fact what came with all early P400 cars. As you can clearly observe, their circular pipe-like disposition allowed a significant amount of "blow-by" to occurr thus causing the rear valance to become quite sooty. Accordingly Bobby Wallace had bodyman Marchesini craft a 'fluted' version of same that featured a wider entry point and a stylishly shaped exit point to be used for late P400 and P400S onwards. These units were fitted at Sant Agata and not at Grugliasco at Bertone SpA where the bodies were manufactured. Proof of this is seen in all Zagari and Coltrin's period images where the new bodies can be seen at Sant Agata sans rear exhaust tips which were fitted just as completion of the cars occured.

It comes as no surpries that these new tips earned a moniker and became known forevermore as "Terminale Bob" in honor of the man who caused their development. I have even seen "Terminale Bob" stickers from the period and Alberto if you scoot along to Bobileff's right now you can see a pair of such faded stickers about to be stripped to go on the lime green P400S - ask Leonard or Gary to show you.

As you have probably seen some of the early 'Terminale Bob' units came with a set of tiny louvres set within (very cool and quite avantegarde!) but these were soon dropped as they were undoubtedly too intricate to manufacture for each set.

BTW, Ansa stickers affixed to the exhaust tips of a Miura of any type is just plain wrong. Ansa had nothing to do with them.

Why do so many early P400 have the later tips?
Simple. As you know it takes all of 3 minutes to take them off and in the 70s & 80s almost all the early cars found new sets perhaps because they were "better" or nicer looking to the car's owners. Thats why you only see the original 'pipe' units anymore on truly timewarp cars such as "3589".

Finally the annual fluids service is done. For old time's sake Claudio donned his original Automobili Lamborghini SpA overalls from the old days for the shoot.

Whilst perfoming final tune on the triple-choke 40 IDL Weber carbs, he is smiling either because of my rude joke, or because he has got them all perfectly in tune. I can tell he is so proud of his development of the Miura at Sant Agata, and by 1971 Bobby Wallace had left SV production to him to develop (whilst Wallace concentrated on the all-new Countach concept).

I see the proper shade of green, so I'll have to agree. :)
