I just now found out that I can take off between Dec 22 and Jan 6. Obviously I have to do the family Xmas thing but after that I have no plans. Any suggestions for a sub ~$1500 vacation from the travelers on this section?

    Some leave from Galveston.

PS; pay the extra $ for 4 star or above ships.

Your problem will likely be the time of year, most everthing sells out that week because the whole world has that week off.

Mexico is also close and easy if you have a passport. You can get some great last minute flight prices on the charter airlines.

Here's a listing of events during that time in San Diego . . .

    http://www.sandiego.org/nav/Visitors/EventCalendar?nav_p=Visitors.EventCalendar&bm=12&bd=22&by=2007&category=&em=1&ed=6&ey=2008&keywords=&page=2

There are so very many last minute "this weekend" and "next weekend" packages available on Travelocity. I'd personally take the one to Rome or go to Germany for the Christmas Markets if leaving prior to Christmas Eve - the one is Munich is wonderful. That's assuming you have a passport . . Your dates have you missing the Autosport International Show in Birmingham, UK by one week (you could join us for a great curry dinner).

So many options - decisions, decisions.....good luck.

La Cantera (a Westin Property) outside of San Antonio in the Hill Country is a great spot this time of year. Great Golf and Spa, good dining too. They've got a $169/night room rate for Texas Residents, plus you can make it a nice scenic drive, using 281 and some of the other back roads.

One Christmas Eve, JRV and I met the Penthouse 25th Anniversary Pet of the Year in a bar, she was spaced out on some chemicals and had knocked three tires off the rim against the curb.......didn;t have that many spares! LOL!

Well, we had closed the Shop for the day, but in HER case.........well, we made an exception!

She offered to make a movie with us but we told her some still photos on the white Countach would be fine....

I ran across those pics the other day.........

Do New Orleans. The Quarter is back to normal, and they are extra appreciative of the business right now. Went in Sept and got Windsor Court for $169. Easy and cheap Southwest flight. Lots of smaller hotels in the area too, so get expedia cranked up, and then contact them directly. We had a great 3 days there!
    Acme Oyster
    K-Paul's
    Cafe duMonde
    The Gumbo Shop
    Tony Angelo's in Metarie
    Commander's Palace Sunday Jazz Brunch.

Lots of suggestions, but in the end it is your vacation. What do YOU and your family like to do on vacation?

I think Phil may be on to something. I can't imagine it will be busy at Christmas, but will certainly be for New years. New Years is a ZOO. Ask me how I know. :)

    Let me add:
Delmonico - EXPENSIVE but mmmmm. Start with the truffle parmesan potato chips and the caesar salad.
NOLA - Have the filet with home made worsteshire, walnuts and red skin potatos.
    Cafe Du Monde for breakfast.
Aunt Sallys pralines. Get them at the Farmers Market
I can't remember the wine store in Metairie, on the main drag that runs parallel to the highway. GREAT sandwiches. There's also one uptown. Martins maybe?

And the winner is: Key West.

I've already done the New Orleans @ New Years twice, this should be a nice change of pace

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

AA & puddlejumper to Key West, and then a 6 days here: http://historickeywestinns.com/properties/budget/budget_key_west.htm?

Just a bed, bathroom and a microwave, but that's all I need. Going to scope out fishing etc next week. Didn't QUITE make it under the $1500 cutoff but close.

Just wandered back in, didn't have net access down there. Overall a good trip, today has been a beat-down travel day (5 hours late and nobody knows where the luggage is). I have several hundred pictures to sort through. Everyone should be there once on New Years Eve.

    Definitely not "cheap", though. :D

Travel rule number 1: NEVER check baggage. EVER. If you have too much stuff, leave something at home.

The only time I check bags is when I go skiing every March, they won't let me carry my skis on. :(

Can't wait to see the pictures. Drunk Tillman is always amusing! :D
