Mark you are doing a wonderful job on this converstion, I must say I am jealous. I have been watching this thread for some time but only noticed the chassis # 50761 of your car in the last pictures you posted. GUESS WHAT??? That is MY old car, I got it in early 97, it is actually the first Ferrari I ever owned. I have been searching (not real hard) for it to buy it back but never did turn it up. I sold it to Butch back in I think 99-2000 (should have never done it) but oh well. So you would be the third owner. I am so glad to finally know where it ended up Butch would never tell me who he sold it to. I wish you much success with this mod and would love to see it when done. Wade
That is certainly the question. It would be from a front drive model, but again I don't think that will work.
Wade, I can assure you that you did the right thing when you sold it. I'm still kicking myself for keeping it after the fire that you only missed the fire by 6 weeks.
Sorry, no carbs.....I'm trying to make hp It will be individual throttle bodies See post 60 for pictures.
hey mark love the project , i have a porsche ferrari shop in florida , if you need any used parts that , i can contribute to the cause let me know , your extremely talented and brave , anything i can do to help let me know , talk to you soon godspeed . and good luck were all rooting for you .......and cant wait to see it done
Mark could you use anything off this as parts? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ferrari-Testarossa-complete-engine-bad-rod-bearing-88_W0QQitemZ190187827774QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item190187827774
I should have bought a whole TR engine and Trans like Paul suggested and I'd be almost done now I think, but noooo.... I think at this point I've got all the major parts, I guess I could back off my 5.5 liter goal and go 5 liter with stock TR liners. That would let me use the stock TR head gaskets which I think would be a plus in my mind...but I want the extra displacement too.....I'm so confused.......
Thanks for the kind words and the offer. I haven't turned-up cylinder liners yet, if you have any 348 liners laying around or know of some???
Seller is disclosing a possible rod bearing problem, it would be prudent to expect it to be A LOT WORSE. No good way to really know what you have here until you own it.
Im pondering the whole trans adapting plan now the Hans ruined my DSG plan with facts. The smart thing to do is put the crank centerline right where the 308 crank centerline was line. That is the way all the previous 365 engine conversions were done and the way I mocked it up in the test fit pictures. The second option is harder but probably better. The V12 is a 60 degree vee, so its much narrower than the original V8 leaving 2-3 inches of space available along the front firewall. Moving the engine forward the 2-3 inches would let me sit engine at least 2-3 inches lower in the car and I think if I can go the full 3 forward, I could go 5-6 inches lower in the car since Im already dry-sumping anyway. Im pretty sure that would yield a very noticeable improvement in handling and I know the extra space on top would let me do a better job getting air into the engine. The down sides are that it means custom bellhousing and drop gear casings and 5is enough to fit a blower on top with room to spare so Id be adding a HUGE temptation. Im already thinking of doing a major rework on the bellhousing to reduce the length so that makes option 2 pretty tempting. I think with the multi-disc clutch I ready have, a flywheel I need to make since I dont have anything useful and an aftermarket hydraulic throw-out bearing I think I can reduce the assembly length by 1.5-2 making things fit a lot better. I may even be able to avoid a custom input gear on the trans maybe Im pretty sure if I skooch the whole trans and inch to the left along with the bellhousing rework the stock drop gears would work. Ill put the engine back in tonight and mock it up in the forward location and see how it looks.
A good friend of mine always tells me never to be mislead by facts.... As for your other contemplations: The way I see it, with all that power behind you, your biggest issue will be car handling, not extra power. Anyone can make a car go fast. Making it handle is something else. You've got a great opportunity here to improve on the handling of your car. For driving fast, I'd say bringing the engine down and forward will do more than increasing displacement from 5.0 to 5.5 liters. So go for it!!!! (if you just wanted straightline speed, then you could have bought an old camaro and put a really obnoxious bigblock in it)... Hans
I just took a good look at the pictures I posted and clearly I was standing on the wrong side of the car last night when I was thinking....on the right side the engine is hanging over the frame and clears by less than an inch as it is. If I want to lower the engine I'd have to relocate the water and oil pumps so I could saw the bottom of the timing cover off. Or I guess if I sit the engine so that whole section is on the outside of the frame so it can drop down along the frame it might work. Oil would build up in there though unless I run another scavenging line from the dry-sump return pump over there......hmmm.....maybe it could work... .but I guess Id still be limited to lowering the engine about 2" before I'd have to worry about the crankshaft clearing the frame. Im not sure that would be worth all the extra trouble....maybe
Judging by the pictures in this thread I'm not sure you have any idead what "all the extra trouble" actually means. I check Ferrarichat twice a day just to see what progress you've made.
Here it is back in the car and sitting forward 3" and down 3" and I don't see any major issues, in fact it looks like I could get away dropping it 4 inches. There is still plenty of room to the front firewall. At 3" the 7.25" clutch pack easily clears the frame, but I think if I go any lower I'd want to make sure the clutch sits outboard of the frame rail, the ring gear would definitely need to sit outside the frame, but that doesn't look like a problem. This might be the way to go. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
What fun would actually driving by spring be when I could still be working on it into next winter instead?
