I'm thinking of keeping my Scuderia in the UK or somewhere in Europe between April and September of every year (total of 6 months).........what are the rules and regulations and which country would be the best?

Thanks in advance for any help.

    hi tarek

no particular rules in france if your car is registered abroad, just keep it insured
that's the only thing that comes in my mind at this moment

for me france would be better as i could be able to meet you and your car

No no, Tarek. Definately Holland would be better. So I can take care of it for you during Apr - Sept.... :D:D:D

I guess for all countries it will be the same; as long as road taxes and insurances are paid, you should be fine, where ever you park it.

    I would suggest Germany :)
We have no speed limit on the Autobahn and I guess that's the most important thing :) And there is also the famous Nordschleife/Nürburgring and the Hockenheimring and some other racetracks so you can always decide whether to drive on track or road.

Thanks Lamar...........if the car is insured in Egypt, will that be enough or does it need to be insured again in France?

It will be a pleasure to meet you in France......even if I decide to keep the car elsewhere in Europe, I will definitely take it for a drive to France next summer.

Martin, how long can I keep the car unregistered in Germany (max. duration)? When I bring it in from Egypt, I want to avoid paying the taxes and duties in Germany......just keep it between Germany and Europe for about 6 months and then re-export the car back to Egypt. If that is possible, would you know if I need to insure the car in Germany, or my local (Egyptian) insurance and registration are enough.

    Thanks

Franc, I love the color of your 308.

Holland is one of my favorite countries in Europe. I've been going to Holland constantly for the last 14 years. I had part of my business until a few years ago in Groningen and Neede. Sold the business a couple of years ago.

I think the car should be exempt from road taxes and maybe insurance if it is registered in another country.......I might be mistaken.

after some research i found this :

you can drive your car during 12 months (if your main residence is not in france) and pick the insurance company of your choice

only if your main residence is in france for more than 6 months, then you must pay registration taxes (french license plates) but you still can choose your insurance company

Thx for your kind compliments Tarek.
Believe it or not, but I am currently in the process of re-spraying the car. Don't worry... it will have the original color again.
Here is a report of the progress. Sorry it is in Dutch but there are lots of pics. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=174006

I didnt mean road taxes and insurance in the country where you park it, but if you pay these in Egypt, you should be fine to drive and park it in whole of Europe. I mean the same as Lamar is saying.

    Tarek,
don't worry about registration, just keep your own from Cairo.
In Belgium we have some kind of temporary registrationplates, but if you don't plan to drive the car every day in those 6 months and around the same area, then don't bother with it.

For the insurance you would have to check with your insurance company. It could be that you're only allowed to keep the car abroad for max 3 months orso, but i'm sure you could make a deal with your own insurance company, this will be much cheaper and easier then to take another special insurance abroad.

About where to keep the car: personally i love the roads in Italy.... AND they have nice women! :D ;)
But for you it's maybe easier to keep the car in the UK? Besides, from the UK you can easily make trips through Europe.

BTW: if you really plan to bring the car every year, i'll make sure i have extra space in my new house (garage)! :D (2009 probably)
And in the meantime i'm sure Bart (Bel360) will be glad to park the Scud next to his Giallo F430! ;)

Hmmm......very interesting. Sounds good. Can the insurance company be a foreign company, i.e. an Egyptian company?

Thanks Lamar for the info. :).

i believe that, for these 12 month rule, you will have to cross the border again after one year to renew a 12 month "keeping" ability.

    For the insurance i dunno.

Guy.......thanks for the info. I do intend to keep the Scud in Europe between April and September, at least for this year. Who knows what will happen in 2009, but I definitely intend to keep a Ferrari in Europe over the coming years. You can plan that extra garage space ;).
If Bart is willing to house my Scud, I'll be glad to leave her there. I must ask him :).

    Best regards,

    Tarek

And btw., we'll definitely drive down to Italy. We have a common reason ;).

I don't think this is an easy to answer question.

As a foreigner it makes sense that you can drive in a car that is registered in your place of residence. I don't know if it makes any difference if the car is coming on a container vessel.

Under dutch law there is a minimum standard for car-insurance-policies insurance-companies are under strict supervision of the government. Wouldn't be surprised if this is governed by EU-regulations. I'd suspect that an Egyptian insurance could raise some questions. Does your insurer offer you coverage in the EU? Mine not in Egypt.

But there must be a possibility I've seen U.S. licenseplates and even Middle-East licenseplates on cars in The Netherlands.

Wouldn't it be best if a dealership answered your questions, maybe the have some experience in these matters?

Thanks, I'll give my insurance company a call to inquire. I'll also call our local automobile club who arrange the car's travel papers. They should also know about insurance.

Travel ofcourse, during the summer period..........it seems that the 6 months is a general protocol, same as the regulations here in Egypt.

in all the EU 6 months the maximum period of time that someone can spend with a foreign car.

if you want to saty more than six months i think (but i'm not sure) that you need to exchange country

As always, all EU countries are equal but Holland a little less so. You can only keep a car on the road on foreign plates in the Netherlands for 3 months. After that, the car has to be registered on Dutch plates and road tax is due.

However, this applies for cars that are used by people domiciled in the Netherlands. If you do not live there, you are not required to register it - in fact, you can't if you don't have a Dutch permanent address. I could not register my own Dutch-plated 550 in my own name (even though I am a Dutch citizen and own a house there), since I do not reside there at the moment!

In other words: if you can ensure the car is insured, there's nothing stopping you from storing your car there. You just have to make sure that there is a never a reason for them to think you actually DO live there, because tax liability on a Scud is substantial... :)

As for insurance - Dutch insurers can't provide full cover on a foreign-plated car, but they can provide 3-rd party coverage (in any case my insurer can - I was interested in importing a car from the UK). So if your insurer covers the car itself when it's in Holland, then you can if need be use a Dutch party to make sure you've got all bases covered.
