I have noticed after looking at the many hundreds of F40 pics on here a few different trim pieces around the exhaust tips on the F40.

I have seen mostly black, a few that almost look like polished stainless steel, and none at all.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Did this change over the years? Or did some cars just get what they got, and that's that?

    Thanks!

You tryin' to start something? :)

I have had this oval-shaped bezel removed and refinished in its original satin black more than once. Considering that some units get a regular licking by errant flames, I can see how some are tempted to refinish it differently as you suggest above.

I think the trim peices were satin black at the car's point of production...

All the ones I've seen look like polished stainless. F40s tend to run rich and will cause a lot of carbon buildup back there so maybe that is why some are black? just a guess

I kinda dought that, even if some carbon built up there, it would surely be wiped right off at the next cleaning. :)

I actually tried to find some pics of a stainless steel looking one, all I can find now are black or what seems to be none! Damnit!

F40 prototypes and the early production cars had none, in most cases. I don't know exactly when they started adding the trim piece, but they all were satin black from the factory.

All 211 road cars built for the USA had the oval trim peice as far as Ive seen by viewing the first car and the last car. My personal opinion is that the units that appear bare-metal or stainless have been refinished to non-original specification...

    Dear Comrade Joe Sackey,

It would seem that both the Euro and English Lightweight F-40 also had the trim in black.

    With kind regards,

The ring around the exhaust was there on all but the very first prototypes, it is black chrome on metal, and is unfortunatly getting affected by the heat and flames from the exhaust. But it is held in place by 4 rivets and can be taken out and rechromed in black. However, not many companies performe black chroming, but the effect is great!

Thanks for the info guys. I guess the ones I saw that seemed to be polished metal were refinished?

Also, is this piece plastic or metal? If it's metal (which I assume it is) that would make it easy to be refinished in something a little more "shiney".

I just wish I could find the pics I saw that seemed to show something like I am refering to....

It is metal, some kind of brass - surprisingly heavy!

Correct, the bare-metal definately has the goldish hue of brass in all cars Ive seen where the paint has flaked off in areas (half of them) and I imagine it is anodized or powder-coated satin black.

Humm, so this may explain things.

I bet the owners of the cars that I have seen that have that trim piece in silver probably simply had the paint removed. This would give a polished finish.

Plastic around the exhaust and dump tube on an F40 would probably be in risk of melting.

Regarding the powder coating vs anodizing question, I didn't think you could annodize brass or steel parts. I thought that process was specific to aluminium parts. My guess would be powder coating or a high temp paint.

It is not powder coating - it is black chrome, a very special process only a few companies perform! I have rechromed on my F40´and the result is perfect!

So I guess some decided to have their own redone in chrome too?
