New laptop

I'm buying a new laptop

Suggestions?

Im not that strict on the specs, but ive seen some good looking ones in my price range >$1100, from micro center, office depot, and everywhere else online but with so many to choose from I'm open to suggestions.

If you're used to Windows, stay away from the Mac. I say this with sincerity as I type into my Macbook Pro. Worst mistake I've made in regards to computing.

 

Really I was just looking at macs, on craigslist. Why do you say to stay away? Can you dual-load xp on the macs?

I, too, am looking to buy a new laptop.

I wanted the pink one from Dell, but they are BY FAR the worst company with which I've ever dealt. This goes for past experience and most recently when I tried to get the pink laptop.

 

Steph, I've never found Dell to be difficult. In fact I had the video card fail on my XPS laptop last week. They shipped the card the next day and I was back up and running the following. Seems pretty good to me...... What's the problem?

 

I just went from a dell XPS to a macbook pro, I really like the macbook pro, I would recommed it unless you use it for your work, then stick to a Windows

 

I do but I have a Macbook Pro, so far I've been lovin' it.

I know there are a ton of different laptops you choose from even with bigger screens, more memory, bigger hard drives, etc... It really depends what you are going to use it for but at least go take a look at a Mac.

 

I just need it for school work, nothing with photoshop or classes that require mac's, but I'll put CAD programs on it and those only work with windows, so if were going to go the way of the mac, and I would have to have a way to still run windows.

Macbook, Sony F series, IBM Thinkpad are all good choices.

Personally I'm looking at old Thinkpads, the 200 dollar type, just for word processing. Built like a brick and reliable.

And the fastest? MacBook Pro That is what I have and I love it. I run Mac OSX 10.5, it is 10 times better than Vista. But if you really have to run windows, you can always double boot and have the best of both worlds.

Gateway has a pretty good product line, good features, reasonable (if not better than) prices. GREAT customer service and warranties that have plenty of wiggle room to get things covered. That would be my windows based brand recommendation.

I have Gateways, and only them since having some serious issues that they took care of INSTANTLY for me, far above and beyond what I would have expected them to do. I also have DELLs and refuse to have anything to do with that company ever again, unless I'm shopping for a boat anchor at some point.

Stay way from Comaq, which is the lower end brand of HP.

PS, I was also Geek Squad agent for a while so trust me when I tell you, these are my personal experiences, and I tell you to stay away from DELL and Compaq also based on the pure mass volume of "unfixable" issues the makers left customers with. Most of which we could fix in a few hours or less, but of course they had to pay for instead of it being an easy warranty fix.

Go to a best buy in your area, go to the Geek Squad desk there, and ask their opinions and take a look at how many, of what brand, are on the back shelf waiting to get fixed. It's a good indication of current manufacturer quality.

The current Macbook Pro was rated the #1 VISTA computer by PCMag.

I would wait 6 days if you are looking into getting a mac, as MacWorld is next Tuesday and they always release new stuff.

 

Love our Macbook. Use Bootcamp to allow us to boot to Windows XP. Best of both worlds.

 

Hmm: do you have any idea what you want to use it for yet?

Do you want a 17" screen with graphics adapter to play any 3D game?

Do you want <6lbs so you can carry it around all day and not walk crooked for a year?

Do you want to run Microsoft stuff to be compatible with school or work requirements?

Do you want to crunch video and audio files all day or just look at the odd Fchat web page and text email?

Who do you trust to fix anything computer wise when it doesn't turn on?

Do you want HD-DVD or BluRay to drive your 60" plasma?

Do you want 18 USB ports and 3 Firewire ports to hook up all your gear with?

I'm a Toshiba fan myself but then I'm into strictly work and business apps, but Lenovo is also good. You get what you pay for, imo. oh, and Gateway went bankrupt and had to be bailed out by a competitor.

laptop update:

ok so i got a new camera canon s5 and i want to get into photoshop. my question what makes a mac so great for this. it seems to me that with enough upgrades a pc would out preform a mac.

also how does the preformance change when you dual boot.

I'm a windows switcher to Mac, and I love it!

I've had my macbook for over a year, and I think that it is a great computer for school. I always type all my papers on the macbook keyboard, and I find it to be one of the best.

Plus, I just upgraded to OS X 10.5, and it runs great on the computer. Actually made it faster.
