Seems like the 330's have been passed over, appreciation wise. At least, compared to dino's. Does this likely mean that their future appreciation will also be limited? If you were looking for appreciation, would one be better off with a poor 330 or a pristine glass 308? The 330's look like nice cars, I just don't understand why they haven't sky rocketed like subsequent cars (dino's, boxers, etc)... Any thoughts?
Are you referring to the 2+2s or the GTCs? The 2-seater GTC has seen a lot of appreciation in the last two years. Ask Dr. Urotrashy about this. Dale
330GT 2+2 Series 1 (4 headlight cars) are not the flavor of the month, therefore they are relatively inexpensive. However, this may change at some point; for a long time 250 PF Coupes were considered boring so they languished price wise, now they are considered elegant... Series 2 (2 headlight) cars are already up considerably over the Series 1 cars. Also, remember that these cars have been cheap for a long time so there are a LOT of differed maintenance dogs out there - be careful. Finally, what are you looking for in an old Ferrari? Do you like the idea of a GT car or a sportscar? Regards, Art S.
Art, I am just looking for a car to tinker with. Perhaps a slow rolling restoration. The simplicity of the older cars attracts me. I am still pondering a carb 308, as they are relatively cheap. But, I also wonder if the prices of the 330's might come down some soon. I just can't see paying $70-80 for a car that needs everything. And, I don't have the resources to buy a restored example, unless I sold the testarossa. Not sure I want to do that right now... I guess I am like Uro...just watching everything as it goes up .
Bo, If you want a good sense of these cars, go to www.TomYang.net and read the restoration diary and the forum posts. Regards, Art S.
Also, Theses cars qualify for most of the European events, so as long as the Euro stays strong, values should continue to rise; remember there are only a few hundred cars worldwide. Regards, Art S.
Parts are a lot easier to come by for the 308, but I must admit personally I would prefer a 330 if money were no object.
Story of my life. But watch out. If I ever buy a Ferrari that will signify an absolute top in prices!
While the prices may be going up, my 330 2+2 has still eaten up a couple of master cylinders, a first gear synchro, a clutch and assorted other little less than $1000 things in the last few years, as well as a lot of smaller DIY projects/parts. My 20 yr old 911 was half the price to buy, never broken down, survived various whacks and bumps from idiot drivers without a mark and has needed only basic maintenance at a shop where they return the car in 1-2 days. Its easy to get carried away by the romance of having a vintage 12 cylinder ferrari, but I'm not sure they are ever a good buy.
I pretty much did the recent 330 2+2 market in Oct and Nov of last year. Came close to buying a decent driver '65 Interim (4-headlight with 2-headlight mechanical improvements) in the mid $70's, and made a $90K offer on a very nice driver '66 Series II 2HL here in Dallas, which the owner rejected. The Interim then sold to someone else for $76K, and as far as I know the 2HL is still around, but the owner isn't in a hurry to sell and I think it would take another $25K on on top of what I offered to motivate him. An ultra nice '64 Series I 4HL was a clear shot for $87K, but decided I didn't really want another early Series I. Ferrari of Newport Beach had an exceptional driver Series II at $109K...I was at the top of the waiting list when it hit the showroom, but by then had decided to drop the idea of another 330, and it was off their website the next week...it was priced right and I guess it sold for asking or near. A big dealer in CA has a mechanically-marginal (undiagnosed funny engine noise) driver Series I for $85K...waaay overpriced. Checkout the For Sale section of the 330 Registry. http://www.parrotbyte.com/330GTRegistry/ Looks like around $100K would be the bottom-end price for a nice, all-together 330 2HL, $85K for the same in a 4HL. IMO, current prices are subject to maybe a 10% overall-market dip, but are in the range where they'll stay longterm. If you want one to keep, buy it and don't worry.
Heres one that can be tracked for 3 more days on ebay........ Regards, Nick http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=024&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=370012047044&rd=1
Scott, In my opinion, a near term correction is unlikely considering the European asking prices listed in the registry - driver Series 1s start at $125k, Series 2s are over $150k. The dollar would have to gain a lot of strength or the european market would have to collapse for US prices to go down. The 'ultra nice' series 1 you mentioned is being exported, and I suspect a number of others are as well. Regards, Art S.
Art...any guess on my part at a dip or correction is qualified with a maybe! Anyone here who seriously wants a vintage 2+2 should buy now and not look back. Yes, the weak dollar has made cars for sale in the U.S. a good deal for foreign buyers. But, if the overseas markets act the same as the U.S. market, with 2+2's being second-tier vintage Ferraris, disdained by the wealthy, unbelievably-high import taxes and duties plus repair costs should tend to keep all but the most-excellent cars here. Remember Rippey's car...the Israeli buyer wanted only the absolute best. It's a very early 330, with painted metal dash. Very unusual to see a 330 with original tools and manuals...those are $$$. According to the 330 Registry, it's been driven less than 100 miles since 1999. Resale red with vinyl-recovered front seats. Looks like the cam cover on one side has been repainted. All in all, a mixed-bag average driver, but 21 bids already!
Waaaaay overpriced, but doesn't surprise me. $74.5K, negotiable, would be better. Are you looking for a 330 2+2?
Scott, Wish I could answer in the affirmitive, but I probably will be in the "looking" & accumulating $$$ stage a few more years, I hope that does not qualify me as a "Poser" I love the vintage cars & I am trying to educate myself with all of the knowledge of the learned individuals on this site. Regards, Nick
Nick, Do you want a Series 1 or Series 2? Also, what condition do you want the car to be in. You mentioned you were willing to do work, how much and what kind of work are you interested in doing? Regards, Art S.
Nick, Well, feel free to ask me whatever, whenever, and I'm sure ArtS will have his piece to speak as well. Get us going on 330 2+2's and the like and we'll hardly shut up. Check out Tom Yang's board; it's the meeting place and info site for vintage 2+2 owners & future owners: www.TomYang.net scott
I had a chance to buy a 330 2 headlight about 4 years ago. It was what I call "show quality" in amazing condition. They were asking just uner 60K. I thought it was too high. I am still kicking myself. I bet the same car is worth almost 2 times that now. For me, I still want a 330 in some form or another but I am REAL shy at current prices. Always a day late and a dollar short.
