Havent posted recently as my wireless network at home blocks fchat. I got my college acceptance letter last month, I'll be attending Baruch College in Manhattan as a part of the Honors Program. Looking to pursue a career in Real Estate.

If anyone has any advice or contacts they can give, that would be great! Now I just need to find an apartment as the college doesn't have dorms. Also, I was probably looking to get a part time job during the school year. I was hoping that a position would open up at a real estate office, but I'm still working on that connection.

What does everyone think of working at Manhattan Motorcars or something similar? Something that would tap into my knowledge and appreciation of cars, but would also put me in a good place to make connections for real estate after college.

Opinions? Ideas? Is retail always a good part-time idea if i'm living on the UES?

Any help would be appreciated :)

So the NY section is now open to all questions?

I have a question: which religion should I chose? I am unable to decide to which deity I should pray to.

2- I believe you working at MMC is up to, well, MMC! It would probablly be wise to, you know, apply for a job there first before asking us.

G'damn my diaper rash is flaring this AM!

A question a child might ask, but certainly not a childish question. For you, Nabbs, I recommend Pastafarianism. You can read more about it here:

Welcome to FChat!! The Honors program there is great... you better work hard!
I'm sure that MMC gets many college student requests to work there... so you have to sound convincing and not concerned about how much they pay.
The city is awesome... feel free to PM with questions.

Are you going into the "real estate and metropolitan development" program in baruch's zicklin school of business? I understand it's a really good and lucrative program for anyone interested in tapping into the commercial end of real estate in nyc.

I am. Not decided yet on if I want to enter commercial, my main passion has been residential. Hopefully I'll be able to check some opportunities for interning at both types and see which I prefer.

    Michael,

Check with the school, as they probably have a housing office that helps students find places to live. You are coming from Ohio, and if you don't know the City, it's easy to make a mistake. The school may also help you find a roommate or roommates to share with, which can make apartment hunting a bit easier.

As for working, there are tons of jobs in NYC if you just look a little. If you are interested in R.E. as a career, try to get an internship with one of the big R.E. management companies. It's a good place to start, learn something about the business, and it looks good on a resume.

    Just a couple of thoughts.

    Steve

Any specific reasons as to why? I fear that I may lose my passion if I go into commercial.

As for a job, I'm meeting with Dolly Lenz on my next trip out to talk about employment opportunities during college, hopefully I'll get to intern or work within her group.

Most likely housing situation is living in a studio for a year with family a few blocks away, then meeting people at college to room with for the next 3 years.

My only concern is that I'll lose the passion that I have for residential homes. The cash would of course be great, but is the discrepancy big enough between residential and commercial salary to justify the loss?

I don't think I've ever heard an 18yo kid ever talk about "the passion of selling resedential real estate." Go to school, get a college degree -- there's a novel idea. And if you're looking for places to live check out the outter boroughs (we have things call a subway that bring you to NYC).

You know if you really want to figure life out, don't try to do so by asking people on a messageboard -- go out and live it for yourself. You're not going to get any real useful info here anyway.

Dolly Lenz is one of the legends in high end NYC residential real estate. She moved early into recognizing that condos were going to be growing faster than co-ops as a factor in NYC prestige real estate. She sold a lot of the condos in the Time Warner Center. Lenz gets a few chapters in Steven Gaines' book "The Sky's The Limit" about NYC high end real estate.

    -I'm not most 18 y/o kids.
    -Getting a degree.
    -Have a place to live.
-Isn't getting input from others an integral part of building a career and a 'life'?
-I'll take a chance that I get a piece of useful information.

If you don't like the point of this tread, simply don't read it, don't go over to another section of the forum and ***** about me.

John, thanks for the info. I've read the book, Mr. Gaines is actually a family friend. Hopefully Dolly will be able to give me a few pointers, or maybe a job during my studies. She sure knows the business better than 99% of the brokers out there.

If you don't want free advice, don't post on a free messageboard.

I assure you name dropping on a messageboard is lame beyond degree, glad you read whomevers book and Dolly WhatsHerFace is a family friend. You can tell her that you know Nabbs on Fchat :) Both are about as useful to you in life.
