Went last year to "see THE show". Wont be back EVER to support THE "show" (despite the bidder's drink ticket =) IMO, lots of really significant cars, but also lots of marginal cars that prey on un-educated (boozed up, more $ than brains) buyers. For god's sake if you are restoring a $400K Corvette, at least get the best Repo 5/8" goldline/redline tire available from Eklers corvette, instead of that total BS Coker tire.... sorry, I'm into details. It's an interesting event. Overall, they bring together some of the worlds best cars and some of the worlds best $ (buyers) but also a lot of "clingers/hangers on/wan-a-bees/etc" JMO
I think you pretty well summed it up. It's the best "reality television" show going but I wouldn't waste my money to go there. Way too much shenanigans going on there that are out of your control unless you are a FOC or a VIP.
It might be fun to go on the weekend when the high dollar cars are presented. I'm tempted to go once just to see what it's like. Just like Ebay , they have a ton of cars that don't belong at a quality auction. (that's why I record it and skip the junk)
Go, just so you know/see it in person. That's why myself and my wife went...to see for ourselves....then judge. If you go for entertainment, you wont be dissapointed. If you go to enhance your love/knowledge of collector cars, you'll be dissapointed. There ARE quality cars there. Correct cars that sell for good/right money. There are also cars there that are nothing more than you'd find at the local "collector" car dealer/hemmings/cars.com/deals on wheels/or even your own local calssifieds... What stuck me most was the lack of knowledge by the overall bidding pool/buyers. BJ is the Mecca for the more $ than brains club & the I want to be somebody club. For guys like Ron Pratt, and other astute buyers, BJ brings in some real nice novel pieces that can't be found anywhere else, and you have to pay to get them. Those buyers are the 20% minority who actually know what they are buying, why they are buying and for what reason. The remaining 80% buy simply for the chance to appear on national TV or say they bought a car at BJ and or met/know Craig jackson or whatever.... There are good/significant cars, but overall its a "show" which only makes $ for the BJ company....it's percieved value.
never did understand the concept of watching a bunch of dummies overpay for cars. Resto-mods, hahahahaha.
I go every year, but then again I'm a sucker ;-) The "All Access" pass is an interesting concept for 2008, looking forward to the show.
Does B-J have a vendors and swap meet area and car corral for sale by owner area like at the Kruse auctions? Am heading out there this weekend and trying to decide which auctions to hit.
I always enjoy watching. For me, it's all about seeing the various cars and guessing what they will go for.
No cars for sale by owner, no swap meet (used parts) as such but a huge vendor area. Check out Russo and Steele...some interesting cars there as well
Was checking out R&S. Have a look at this beauty. They have some good Ferraris listed: http://www.russoandsteele.com/collector_car/1967_ferrari_330_gtc_2_2_coupe/7370.html
BJ....I gotta nother meaning for those initials, and I feel it applies to this auction too...lost all respect for them after the last fiasco.
Will be very interesting to see how the buying action is now that we are in a Recession and the home equity loan spigot is closed. If Barrett were a stock I would be short it going into this years circus. Those $500k restomods will be looking a whole lot more "spensive" this year!
I went to the one in West Palm last year, which is probably small compared to the Scottsdale event. You don't see many Ferraris there, just muscle cars. They only had a 355 convertible and a 1989 328. The 328 was yellow and had 55K miles but was repainted and had new leather. A few of the engine parts were not standard but otherwise it was in great shape. The owner must have spent a lot to get it that way and it went for about $52K. BJ tried to hype it as a rare car because it was yellow. Okay, but not everyone wants a yellow Ferrari. On TV, the cars look flawless, but in person, they are not perfect and they store them on a dirt field.
Anyone else notice their selling hats, shirts, jackets, etc...? I'm sure this has been going on for years at the event but the TV ads are kind of tacky.
Off to a good start. A salvaged Porsche, a tuperware Cobra w/ non operating doors and a 356 speedster repo all for about $50K each. More $ than brains........
I am still shaking my head with some of the junk they are selling tonight. Friday and Saturday nights are a lot more interesting.
