So, now that there's an un-authorized biography about to hit the stands, it looks like Scientology is about to get dragged from its roach hole and out into the sunlight for a little more attention than it typically cares for. This is a long read (10 web pages) but it's a page-turner. Check it out before this thread ends up in P&R.

How does any reasonably intelligent person get wrapped up in something like that?

I feel the sudden need to peel the labels off of a few soup cans and give myself an audit.

Any reference to him being a homo? If not, the book is just a carefully crafted PR piece.

Interestingly, the blooks claims he is not. The excerpt I read did not really seem that disparaging of either him or the group, but probably all the trouble is coming from just the fact that supposedly secret things are mentioned.

I don't know about the gay thing. It sounds like a lot of rumors point towards Scientology influences, and when he was still married to Mimi Rogers she said he was going through a period of abstinence that didn't sit well with her. But listening to Nicole Kidman and her associates, it sounds like he was really into her. But apparently Mimi Rogers pushed back a little bit and told them off by threatening to go public with what she knew. They reached an amicable solution.

Intersting article in Vanity Fair concerning the New York couple that committed suicide recently??

The video game artists...in a nutshell they had gone to CA to pursue careers and were convinced they were targeted by the Church and it's grasp on Hollywood...it made for scary reading....anyway they are dead now.

Tom Cruise was mentioned in that article....

Apparently you 'confess' all past personal/sexual trangressions in an 'audit' and that starts a handy lil' file for them to use later.....

I see that Cruise and the "church" are threatening a $100 million. Wouldn't this bring the church and Cruise to the forefront and open up if it did?

I hate to be such a cynic, but consider this: Cruise and Robert Redford made a little politically-motified "vanity" picture that totally tanked during the Christmas season.

His new action-adventure Valkyrie picture is in trouble (due to some unstated offenses to the GDR government)...it has had it's release pushed back until late fall 2008 without coherent explanation.

Could this all just be a clever PR stunt, made to LOOK like he is under some kind of attack?

Results. It's basically a self-help religion. So if it helps you in life, you stick with it.

Scientology makes perfect sense..... to Tom Cruise, the guy is dumb as a box of rocks. Personally a religion started by a science fiction writer that is centered around crappy lie detectors (e-meters) and brainwashed alien souls seems more like a cult centered around some kind of perverse quest for power.

Yeah he sure is dumb with a net worth of $350+ million, I am working on becoming as dumb as Tom Cruise. The dumber I get the more my net worth increases.

yeah right all that money went to the church. Ok so all I know about it is what I read from wiki, and we all know wiki can be off sometimes. In this case I hope so because I don't see anyway that someone can be told this story and think hey yeah that sounds right ok let go with it.

They don't tell you the story until much later on. They lure you in with dianetics and the e-meter bologna that's supposed to make your life better. Then after multiple large donations you're eventually told this story.

There was a guy on Fchat with a 550 or a 575 who was a Scientologist. Kinda ran off the forum when somebody mentioned "Xenu" and "Space Opera".
