Those mustangs with great paint and interior that just happen to have a non matching engine look like great deals. I actually get excited watching the early days for deals. The Friday and Saturday auctions just leave me shaking my head wondering who would pay 2,3,4 or 5 hundred thousand dollars for a muscle car. Monster garage junk is a new low.
Tried to do the fantasy deal and the web site said they were CLOSED for bidding. got bored with the marginal cars that weren't stock. or interesting. The only foreign (non American) car I saw was a Rolls Royce (red) that wouldn't start and had to be pushed off the stage. The cameras seemed more interested in showing the "bidding assistants" than the cars.
B-J Auction is designed to make foreign cars look bad, and muscle cars look good. Except for a rare gullwing Merc or something, foreign cars do not sell well there. They will rarely have a top notch foreign car there. Muscle cars are B-J's bread and butter so they will always get all the hype. I think B-J tries to keep prices going up - not because they are enthusiastic about the cars themselves - but because that's where they get the money from. I also agree about some of the bidders have more dollars than brains (I wish I had that affliction). How did they get that way in the first place? Those Monster Garage cars were total crap! I can't believe they had those go across the block. The only one I liked was the Peterbuilt tricycle, for some reason. But the B-J Auction is like a road accident, I don't want to look but I do anyway.
+1 I haven't been to many auctions but the ones I have been to have never had junk like this. And did you hear the part where they called people elitist if you only want to see pristine cars at auctions? If I want to see junk at an auction I'll go to my local police auction.
I think they go which way the wind (money) goes. I remember not too many years ago when Ferrari's and vintage cars were the hot ticket.
I think its ok they have some lower priced or not so perfect cars come across the block. Gives the "regular" people a chance to buy a car they may have always wanted. So it may be a driver, but I would rather drive a car as well than stare at it.(even though that can be fun in itself) There were some reasonable offerings last night as well should be tonight and thats ok in my book. The monster car garage cars though, were complete junk and good to see no one paid to much for a car on a bill of sale. I dont like when C. jackson starts shouting in the middle of bidding that a car should be worth this much and that much and its worth more than the current bid. Whats up with that. I dont think him being biased and wanting every car to sell for 500 grand should be commenting on what cars should be selling for. It all lines his pockets and it should be determined by the consumers, on what they are willing to pay for said vehicle at that time. No outside or owner of the auction influences should be happening in my opinion.
Now this is an interesting vehicle. A 1963 Pininfarina bodied Corvette... http://www.barrett-jackson.com/application/search/carlist_Details.aspx?&In_LotNumber=1304
I enjoy watching, although I couldn't do it without the Tivo and the ability to skip stuff I'm not interested in. The interesting thing to me is watching the trends come and go. Remember when Speed had Alain De Cadenet up on the block to talk about the cars? That was when the European stuff was the big sellers. Now that the muscle car craze is slowing it will be interesting to see what the BJ buyers are after next. Personally, I think it is just a matter of time before BJ is selling Coutachs and TRs for seven figures. I mean really, if they can sell a Screaming Chicken Trans Am for 62k does anyone think they won't eventually be selling the iconic cars of the 80's for seven figures?
I've been going to B-J the last few years, but I am not into Muscle cars. I could literally walk there from where I am right now, but meh.... I think I'll check out some of the half-dozen other auctions instead this year.
If you'll do a search in the 308/328 section, you'll find that car, that serial number, that "new paint and interior story" told quite alarmingly. The keyword search would contain "furnace water heater" since I recall the car was left in a basement where a fire erupted from said combustible fixture. The car HAD been white, as further noted in the thread. I personally spoke to the owner/seller prior to the auction and it was, shall we say, a very evasive conversation. My jaw dropped at the price paid by what was almost certainly an unsuspecting buyer. Even a cursory VIN check would've/could've revealed the smoky past. Thanks to F-chat, that buyer was not me.
Last night 1/2 of the 100 or so cars sold went for less than $25K. There were cars there that would have went for twice as much 1-2 years ago IMHO.
Pasta maker 308 from J James monster garage just went for $18K plus commission, + transport +tax.... There wasn't $18K worth of parts on that car....
The cars at BJ are not selling for as much as last year. It seems like the muscle car market is down.
It seems all the cars have been restored or are being sold by a guy who's retired and doesn't have the space. The young guys have eyes for other cars. The decline is inevitable IMO.
A little more interesting tonight but it looks like bidding is not as crazy as last year. Sign of the times I guess. Maybe when the more rare cars hit this weekend the feeding frenzy will be in high gear. The two "ladies" in the black Lincoln were interesting.
