EU calls on F1 to switch to four-cylinder, bio-fuel engines

Guys,

We have to embrace the future now. Petrol engines are history!!!!, fact (and so will be Ferrari, etc. if they don't start looking in to the future and make more efficient cars).

So do we want racing to continue or suddenly be protested off the planet?, I'd rather it continue. Why not though get rid of pitstops and run hydrogen powered cars, that would be cool

BTW: Have you every heard a Ford BDA 4 cylinder at peak revs? ... they sound awesome!

BMW ran inline 4 cylinder engines with turbos back in the 80's that were producing over 1,200 horsepower in qualifying trim. The cars would have a much more narrow bodywork, and coupled with slick tires, I think that it could make for a great show. Ideally, for me, I'd like to see the manufacturers use a production design block that would be the basis of engines in cars sold to the public for homolgation purposes, and single element wings.

 

The EU can't even govern itself effectively. They should get their own house in order before meddling in others' affairs. Of course, no politician does this. Much easier to tell others what do do and how to do it. Don't do as I do, do as I say.

Why pick on F1? What about other forms of motor sport? What about airplanes and motorboats? the list is endless.

Government by the government, for the government and of the government. They know what's BEST for you whether you agree with it, like it or not.

I am all for embracing the future, but I wonder why the demand from the EU. Do they think we are going to run out of Petrol ? Maybe they think dead dinosaurs turn to oil instead of dust. Do they not believe that we are in an intra glacial period? So the earth should be heating up before the next ice age. Never mind, everyone ignore this, or the thread would have to be moved to Politics & Religion.

 

According to some (even an old Reagan official) we've reached the peak and are indeed on the downward slope of oil supply. It'll happen at sometime. Better to plan for it sooner rather than later.

it's funny how they've already destroyed the earth in so many ways all these years, and now suddenly, they wanna attack racing and urge racing to go green. what a bunch of BS.

 

And how much longer will the lights stay on if all racing stops right now? This is nothing but pandering.

 

It is not that turning racing green would save the planet by itself, the idea is that by going green racing sets a trend and motivates people to do the same for their own cars etc.

That's where it irks me: I resent this hidden way of education and dogma. Plus I'm a firm believer that racing is or should be one of the last bastions in life where everything goes. While all the spectators might drive to the GP in their electric golf carts, the race cars should be fire breathing dinosaurs from the time when racing was dangerous and sex was safe.

For the same reasons I'm also very happy that companies like Marlboro support my beloved team. I'm not a smoker and know that smoking is bad, but I hate it when the government thinks it has to educate me through laws and bans.

 

Take hope. No one commutes by horse and buggy any longer but horse racing is still big.

 

Funny you say that:

I visited Porsche once and had an interesting discussion with their marketing manager. The question was whether Porsche is in the wrong market selling sports cars while everybody goes green, speed limits etc etc. The answer was, that nobody uses horses anymore today for transportation, but there are still horse races. Same is true for sailing ships.

This discussion was btw 20 years ago. I don't think anything has changed since. Nor will it in 20 years. At least I hope not.

 

If anything if people stopped using cars on a daily basis it the ic engine would loose its connection with pollution and it might reduce the onus on motor sport. At the turn of the last century there was a move to ban horses from urban areas because of the "pollution" they caused.

 

This is so typical of delusional "green-think" -- the fuel used by the cars is completely insignificant compared to the amount of fuel needed for travel/R&D/lodging/salaries/etc.. The only real action that would make F1 "green" is to not do it at all (and I'd much rather cancel something else ).

 

I'm sure those unnamed officials will become rich by placing long term bets against the oil industry. Yeah right.

The biggest bunch of nonsense that gets peddled is that we need the government to help us transition to more efficient energy. If oil supply begins to decline and we adhere to the free market, we will smoothly transition to alternative fuels. There is already plug in hybrid technology that can achieve 150+ miles per gallon in short bursts, if gas were to hit $6 we'd begin to use those cars as our daily drivers. When the government gets involved we get lawyers and politicians trying to tell ENGINEERS how to serve the publics auto needs.

Ferrari's won't be affected because gas is such a small part of the operating cost.

 

As long as the government determines the price of gas by way of taxation it is involved for better or worse.

 

Yes but you all enjoy the fact that F1 is one of the most widely known sports ... thus they have to set correct examples.

I already think they are dinosaurs that are not providing any benefit to the auto industry ... okay, little benefit. I was one of the few that was happy when they reduced the engine size, but it was not enough.

We have to remember motorsport is an extremely wasteful sport, all that testing, all those tyres and fuel ... all for nothing other than a grin on our face .

BTW: Horses are animals ... no comparison to inefficient things we make ourselves.

I already have kids that try and make me feel guilt about my love of motorsport ... I reply by saying that their favourite band wastes a tonne of electricity just making noise too. BUT that does not mean I don't think we should try to improve our game.

Aussie V8 Supercars now plant a few thousand trees every season, etc. BUT F1 needs to do more. This is a chance for F1 to again become useful, again be used to develop USEFUL technolgoy (not wanky paddle shifts for poseurs, who want to look like MS).

If the F1 ruling wankers relaxed the rules and said that any power source goes but only 1000cc petrol engines, you would very quickly see the most amazing electric or energy regathering systems, or hydrogen, etc. This techology could save the motor industry and ALSO would be a great add to all the car haters that we are working on it.

F1 currently demonstrates most clearly that auto manufacturers have their head in the sand or up their arses and expect everything to keep on keeping on. Even if we never run out of petrol, or global warming is bollocks, I want us to learn to live more efficiently. We have most of the technology now we just need to make it better!

B, What justification does sport in general require?
C, In this context a horse's existential nature is not germane.
D,How you deal with your guilt feelings is your business not the rest of the world's.
E,You're right the planting of a few trees is pointless in this context. The idea that "racing improves the breed" has never been a needed justification for mo-
tor sport.
F, Why should F1 become the avenue for the improvement of technologies unrelated to the sport?
G,I wish you luck in your aspirations. I see no reason that F1 is the appropriate avenue for their realization.

Many F1 engines were 4 cylinder back in the day. The World Championship winning 1983 BMW engine comes to mind. Zakspeed, Hart and even Alfa Romeo also used 4 cylinder turbos in the mid-80s.

 

'Gas' hit $6? If only!! It's about $10 over here.
