Wraps came off the new BMW Sauber F1.08 this afternoon in Munich with the team paying special attention to the drivability of the new package given that traction control is no longer permitted in the sport.

Aspects such as side wind, ‘peakiness’ of the suspension are all aimed at making the car more drivable and naturally the team are keen to close the gap on rivals Ferrari and McLaren with its new package. The front wing features a large scoop with a rounded underside while the team have reduced the engine cover volume aimed at improving the airflow to the rear elements.

“We have come a long way, two and a half years since the team was created,” team boss Mario Theissen began. “We spent a lot of effort on the new car. The F1.08 includes everything we have learned and we think it will be a big step forward again. We are confident that we can close the gap.”

“We think they are the best drivers and I am pretty sure they can both still improve,” Theissen continued with reference to Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica. “We have a good relationship between the drivers and the engineers and I see the drivers as key people and we can be sure we’ll make progress again.
    ”

Theissen explained that Marko Asmer will test for the team this week, but no decision regarding the third driver will be made before the end of the month.

Both Heidfeld and Kubica were upbeat about their own chances for the forthcoming season. “I am very excited as I know the people in the factory are happy with progress,” said Heidfeld. “I am sure that I can win races. In theory we should be able to close the gaps to the cars ahead of us.”

“We have [made] big progress in 2006 and 2007 and the people working on the car have given the maximum and maybe we can win some races,” Kubica added. “I believe this car will help me and Nick and the Sauber team maybe win races. The whole season will be a challenge, every race is a challenge and we have to maximise our performance.”

interesting to see they too, have taken the cover rims like Ferrari. overall, rear end of the car, very nicely sculpted sidepods, and interesting front wing.

+1 always fun to see what teams don't want to share.

Looks much better than last years, but I'm still not a huge fan of most of the BMW F1 cars.

What in particular? I'm still wondering why we've got a high downforce front and a low(ish) set up in the back.

The only new twist I see are the verticle pieces coming up off the back of the barge boards. Everything else looks like variations of old stuff.

F1 cars are looking uglier and uglier. As long as BMW gets that 1st win, I'll be okay with it. :) Best modern BMW F1 car is the FW26b, without a doubt. Also was the last win for BMW in Brazil of '04. :(

Those devil horns seem a lot more pronounced with a different angle.

Me too. Wish Porsche would come into F1 but Weinderkin says F1 is a colossal waste of money......sort of my feelings when I look at the sticker of a Cayman ($50K+ for 245 hp?)
