Updated LMP Ferrari

Looks good but Porsche doesn't run LMP1 and it's highly unlikely they would. Rather than the DP type front end, I'd rather see a that of an Enzo. Regs for 2010 stipulate that the manufacturer's badge and brand and wider windscreens for front and a car represents a manufacturer and marques are recognized from one another. The Peugeot 908 running LMS today can be seen in that of 92-93.The front of the 908 remembles more of an F1 car. I think if Ferrari were to do a LMP1 car, to be totally competitive to Peugeot and Audi they're going to have to be a diesel. I've seen the 908's run at Monza and LeMans in their first year out and after working out the problems, they should be very stong this year. Glad to see Audi taking them on in LMS.

True. LMP1 rules clearly favour the Diesel cars. You can't win with a Ferrari-like high-revving petrol engine there.

 

Forza Motorsports should buy that design from you!

 

2010 Toyota is looking at a hybrid for Le Mans - that could be interesting. In 1999 they entered the 24 hour in GT1 and finished second to a BMW and ahead of two Joest R8R's. I love that car Toyota ran - (my 1:18 of the one Allan drove sits center stage with a couple "as raced" MS F1 winners). They're looking to beat the R10's and 908's so it makes you wonder if they plan on runing LMP1. Here's a fewToyota quotes:

Dozens of Toyota employees from its motor sports and hybrid vehicle development divisions have formed a team to develop racing cars for Le Mans.

Toyota officials say they are confident in taking on the challenge of the Le Mans race, saying that the company aims to win the race at its first renewed attempt.

“There are a number of uncertain factors such as our [future] results in F-1 that might affect our ability to meet the challenge,” a Toyota executive said. “But our target is definitely Le Mans.”

That's an odd picture of the 905 that you posted. Most versions of the 905 didn't look anything like that, especially the ones that won LeMans in 92 and 93.
In fact, I don't think the 908 looks anything like the 905 for the most part.

Know any information on the usage of that 905? That seems to be a special body for a specific race or event.

 

Now thats great. Seems that Le Mans is becoming what F1 should be, a testing field for new technologies on highest performance level.

 

The drawing looks more like a Daytona prototype than an LMP1 or LMP2 coupe to me. I agree that with the current ACO rules, the car wouldn't be all that competitive, as diesels have a rather big advantage.

 

That looks so amazing. To me it almost looks like a Sauber Mercedes.

That particular 905 was in the museum just outside the circuit entrance for Le Mans last June. I've attached a photo of the placque that was next to the car. The significant thing to me was that Jean Todt managed the team. To me the most beautiful of all Ferraris is the P4 - the photo is from the 60th Anniversary at Fiorano this past summer. The car is immaculate being prepared/presented by Bob Smith Coach Works in Gainesville (as I recall the owner lives in Canada).

I, too, have an LMP project I've done on an internship with BMW. I've completed the 3d data and milled a 20% (1/5 scale) model.

Its not a Ferrari, but I would love Carol's input (though to be honest, the design phase has already concluded). If you would rather me start my own thread, I will, but I figure it has some relevance here, too.


Here is a little teaser then, for now...




Still undecided on a final paint scheme, so who knows... I am about 90% done with the model, and should be painting it later in the week.

Very nice work! It looks futuristic, but maintains Bangle's design flair with a fine representation of flame surface styling. The rear wing's design, I think, is very radical though believable. Would love some front end shots, as its tough to get a full mental image of the car without seeing her from the nose, though with what I can make out of the grille area, you are taking a very modern approach to the traditional kidney-shaped' BMW fascia. Very bold. Very "now."

If Group C/IMSA GTP rules still applied you might have something. Always read the rule book before you design something. Tunnels are not allowed nor would your rear wing. Those are two glaring items at first view. I do like your front wheel air extraction design. It looks similar to the Toyota Gurney Eagle but with the addition of front diffuser venting running below it.

Right, but how often are rules changed? And how many times has a car been competitive pre Le Mans, only to be a huge failure due to a last minute rules change?

Keeping that in mind, my project brief, per BMW, was to make an LMP-esque car somewhere in the near future, without a strict adherence to the current regs. It was supposed to be an interpretation of Sports Car racing, rules to be proposed/justified by me. The more loose interpretation would yield a product that is less conventional and more unique. I think that all design, at least preliminarily, should be this way.

So yes, I am fully aware that it will not conform with CURRENT ALMS/ACO regs, but it was never intended to. With some minor changes, I feel it COULD, so it gives a contemporary, yet slightly futuristic feel. Also, I don't feel that my design was compromised to adhere to some rules that won't be the same in the near future, again, because it is just a theoretical dream (I didn't see much wrong with Group C, as many of you would agree).




Perhaps, then, that is a thesis of my design... Much like the current state in F1 and FIA, ACO/ALMS regulations strangle the competitiveness and excitement out of Sports Car racing. To further differentiate itself from the IMSA/Can-AM butchery, they have re-instated rules that return the sport to Group C/GTP glory. It is paralleled in F1 with the FIA's return to slick tyres, no traction control, and more efficient energy output.



I appreciate your comments though, and like I said, I didn't explain my project completely (though perhaps I should have) due o this not being my own thread. If F&M Racing does not mind (feel free to contribute) I would enjoy furthering this topic. I could go on for hours about how the death of Group C was perhaps explanatory at the time, but invalid now due to newer technology and the current motorsports climate.
