308 split coolant hose

    i just split a coolant hose under the intake plenum on my 80 gtsi. its number 23 on table 21 of the parts book. any suggestions for the easiest way to replace it? thanks, steve are there any after market replacements available?

    Gates green stripe 1 5/8" hose (41mm) avail at good autoparts stores like NAPA (buy a 3 foot length and use a woodworking chop saw to cut indv pieces cleanly to match exist). Get new high quality ss hose clamps while your at it, it'll make the job easier. I found it easiest to pull the inner whell house out on the pass side, remove and reinstall the water pump and thermostat housing to get better access. Also, a 1/4 inch socket set with lots of different length extensions and a universal joint is a must for this project (to reach the hoseclamps through the plenum and intake runners from the front side of the motor).

    Have fun, I did all of mine on the whole car(nose to tail) at the same time, took a full weekend, and, yeah bloody knuckles happened.

    Steve, I just had to do this to my 80 GTB in November. Here's a thread on mine. YOu can do some searches for coolant leaks and find more info too.

    Plan on removing the rear hatch to get to everything. YOu'll need a buddy to help take it off. Then you'll have to remove the Air box and Plenum to get to the hoses under there. Its a pain in the rear to do but can be done in about 3-4 hours. I did the research to find out what parts I needed before I started. There is a wiring harness under the plenum that you should inspect carefully. I found where some "critters" had chewed on some wires on mine. I made a repair to the harness and wrapped it up with some wire loom for protection. While you have everything off the top of the engine its a great time to clean it up. Also be ready for about 1 gal of coolant to leak out when you take off the old hoses at the "T" under the plenum. Once I got the plenum off I used a razor knife to cut the old hoses away then used them to measure the new hoses to cut and install. Don't reuse any clamps or any old hoses you pull off. You have two large hoses under there and two smaller hoses with bends. YOu can't test this for leaks without putting it all back together and you damn sure don't want one of them to have a small leak when you finish becaues you can't get to most of the hose clamps with the plenum back on.     I know everyone uses the 1 5/8" Gates Green Stripe, and I might be the lone dissenter, but I think that this is a bad idea. The 1 5/8" is a tad too large, the correct hose is a metric size and fits right (40mm? I don't remember). A hose clamp will be able to smash down the 1 5/8 to fit, at least for a while, but all of the Green Stripe hoses on my car were seeping when I did my major service last year and had been seeping for a while, judging by the crud on some of them. This seepage results in degradation of the aluminum pipes and nipples. If 1 5/8 was the best we could do then I'd say fine, that's what we get. But go to any good auto store and you can get a piece of radiator hose that is the right diameter, made by a reputable rubber company. Why use the wrong diameter when the right diameter is easily avilable? (I posted the hose part numbers I bought in the 308 cross reference thread.)

    the dif between 1 5/8" and 41mm (the correct size) is .011" FYI,...... the defense rests.....but I CAN respect the OCD "monk" like focus ( I only wear Ferrari licensed and authorized clothing, and I look ......Marvelous!!!)

    Although it's a beyotch to get on (and many cars using the 41mm size are working OK), I think the 38mm/1.5" size is the better choice -- when warm, the clamp is providing (too much of) the sealing with the 41 mm size -- JMO.
