Steering hub help required

    Can anyone help? ( Omgjon may have been the last person to do this here) I am trying to take this apart but its a bit of a jigsaw! In the first pic its shows my 10mm ring spanner on a bolt which i suspect has to be removed ( only thing is this bolt is so tight its starting to round off) to enable the unit to split so that i can remove the firbreglass mouding to enable the mousehair to be replaced.

    Just take a drift and tap it off from the rear.

    Graham - that 10 mm bolt must be removed. It does hold the collar to the chassis. Usually it is not too tight and comes off quite easily. You may have to heat it a bit, or drill it out.

    Just renewed by dash material and had all this off recently. Yes this bolt has to be removed to split the hub and remove the fibreglass mould.

    I wouldnt recommend heating it up though as you may detsroy the crinkle finish. Try soaking it with WD40 and leaving it a while.

    If you need anybody close by ( Maldon Essex) to recover the dash etc the guy who did mine made an excellent job of it. He has redone the tunnel, door cappings etc and good quality work.

    Just been out to the garage to give that bolt a large portion of WD..... will try it again tommorow, it is in an awkward position and i suspect that i might have to drill the b#stard out in the end!
    Tony i shall require somebody to do the recovering for me and when i meet up with you re the ring nut tool we'll have a gossip.
    I see you had to succumb to the same mousehair as i have obtained , which is a fairly glossy finish..... It appears that the original slightly greyish finish is not available.

    The flash tends to reflect on the material, it looks better in the daylight!!

    I made the steering hub tool as well, so you are welcome to borrow that too.

    the first photo shows the "purple/bue" hue of the current mouse hair. i keep being told it was like this when new, but i have a hard time believing it, it looks plain silly. personally, i would like to redo my dash, but can't bring myself to sacrfice origanlity for a purple/blue mouse hair

    In another ten years, all the dashes will be covered with this stuff and no one will remember what the original stuff looked like, then you'll be fine. :D

    Unfortunately my photographic skills are not that good. The flash tends to highlight the colour shades depending on how it is brushed. In natural light it looks a lot better. To be precise it is alacantara and not mouse hair. I did some research on this beforehand and this is the nearest possible match.......cannot do anymore than that.

    Personally i dont think anybody really knows, most guess what it is.

    Go to the local auto supply place (whatever the UK equivalent of NAPA is) and look for a product called "PB Blaster" or similar penetrant. This is superior to WD40 for "getting your nuts unstuck", in my experience.

    I put straight bleach on the new type mouse fur fabric and it did bleach out a good deal. I think you could find the right dilution to take the edge off the over-black look. There are also fading solutions in the fabric shops that might work better. The main fear is whether the new shade would be stable after treatment. I have a whole bolt of the new stuff and will experiment when I get some spare time.

    Not sure i am that brave to start tipping bleach on it.

    It was a tedious job to do as well. Think i will leave in the sun for a few days (when we get some that is)

    I thought about leaving a swatch of it in the sun for a while to see how much it would change. This would be the best solution if it works. I thought the new type was supposed to be colorfast and not fade but I think it more likely to fade some than stay the same. Doesn't need a whole lot of fade to do the trick.

    Hi all:

    Alcantara is a perfectly good choice for the dash but mousehair was widely available when I restored my car in the late 90s. Is that no longer the case or do some of you simply want the longer wear and fade resistance that alcantara probably offers?

    I got mine from Dennis McCann back in the late 90s. He had updated mousehair which looked exactly like the original but was UV resistant so it wouldn't fade like the stuff the factory used in the 60s and 70s.

    The three knobs (one to each stalk) headlights etc are a bit the worse for wear on my car. Are replacements available or at least whats the trick for redoing the white indents, i'm sure John did this to his.

    If you want to splash out Dino spares in Germany do a complete new assembly. not cheap at £570, but i think Superformance are waiting on some shortly. Might be cheaper if you can wait a while?

    I did my indents with white paint and rubbed it into the groove. Carefully polish off while tacky so you dont pull out the paint. Did the gear knob numbers in Tippex, that worked OK too.
