I need to get a trailer brake actuator installed in my 05 Tundra Truck.

The Toyota place says they don't do that.

What kind of shop would be the least likely to do a hack job, mess up the ABS and the stability control stuff, blow fuses etc?

An RV dealer, a trailer dealer, a regular mechanics shop?

    thanks.

I'd say a regular mechanic. We had one installed on our Honda Oddysey at a local trailer shop and the brakes have been a little funky ever since. I don't think an RV mechanic would be any different than the trailer shop. If you have a good Foreign car mechanic they can do it.
Me and my brother did it ourselves on his Tundra in a parking lot when we picked up a trailer in Georgia (the part was $79 at Autozone), and it has worked fine since then.

Here are the pics of the install on the Tundra.
First is the wire that comes out from behind the left kickplate, then some of the wiring mess we made (remember we did this in a parking lot with a leatherman), then some of the part that Toyota hides in the glove box... your Tundra should have that white wiring harness that has all the wires coming out to the right in the glove box. Install it into the part that is in the hole in the wall behind the left kickplate, then wire your controller according to the wiring diagram that came with it. It took us about 20 minutes to wire it up. If you take an hour you should not see the wires we left dangling...

Until I get the actuator, how dangerous do you think a 20 mile trip would be with a 800pound flat bed trailer with a 2.5x3x14 foot bundle (packed car lift) weighing 1840 lbs?

In other words, is it reasonable to ease along secondary roads pulling 2640 lbs with no trailer brakes for 20 miles as a one time deal?

I would not worry about it. I took our boat out last week and the brakes literally crumbled out onto the floor as I pulled the boat out of the garage with my wimpy 4 cylinder short cab Tacoma. The boat and trailer weighs about 4200 pounds and I had no brakes and no problems. The only concern is if you have an emergency stop or maybe some ice on the road, or going down a really steep gravel road the trailer may want to pass you. When we went up to buy the enclosed trailer we hauled the roadster up with the Tundra and I don't think the brakes worked on the Uhaul trailer. We did not even know there was anything being pulled. The Tundra is strong, and as long as you are careful and leave plenty of rrom in front of you I would not see any problems. Funny about the lift I just ordered one this morning from a Kansas company, and I have to go about 20 miles to pick it up when it arrives in about a month. I went with an Allamericanlifts.com model 815 which is similar to the Backyard Buddy (outside collar design etc...).

Well, the wire is about 1/4" wrapped in black tubing inside the hole there. Use your professional training and just feel around....

Sure, but the trailer is kind of a 'long haul' from your location.
We got a sweet deal from a place in Douglas Georgia. They also have trailers in Hayesville, NC not too far from you. The company advertises on Ebay all the time. We got a nice tandem (drop) axle, ramp door 16x7 enclosed with 2' V-nose and 10 d ring tie downs for $3400 plus tax. I think the company is called 'The Trailer Zone' and the saleman is named James... I have hauled it back up to the mountains for Thanksgiving when the Ginetta got to see its first snow! We take the small car and also bring my brother's triumph speed triple inside that little trailer...
