F-40. Should It Really Have Had A Twelve Cylinder Naturally Aspirated Orchestra?

I have been wondering whether the F-40 should have had a twelve cylinder naturally aspirated orchestra rather than the turbo-charged eight piece band?

Part of the reason the F40 is unique an unlike many of the other Supercars is its powerplant. The V8 turbo makes it unlike mostly all of the other Ferrari lineup and other supercars in general.

I like the F-40 as the ultimate incarnation of the 308 engine, in its most raw, powerful form.

If you want a 12, there's always the F-50 and the Enzo for supercars. I love the F-40 for what it is, as it is!

they should have put a light weight N/A pushrod V8 in there. less weight, similer power (waits to be shot)

And damn, you ask some weird questions....

 

You certainly know also that there was an F40 v12 used for racing purpose in UK championship, I will try to find back some pics if I can post them. Anyway just type F40 v12 on google and you will find it.
The major problem was the size of this v12 engine, longer than the v8, so it was a little bit "inside" the cockpit! but it works, ask the UK racing team using it.

I was discussing this car few months ago, it was possible to buy it with the original engine also as it was possible easily to convert it back to "normal" F40 if requested!

This may not fit in that well on this thread but Nissan has a new 6 cylinder that has the twin turbos and it is extremely fast. The times they were quoting at the Detroit car show makes it faster than the Ferrari line up, the new ZR1 Vette and everything else. I guess with newer technology it is easier to make the car fast. I know it is still a Nissan but it is impressive for 70k or so. The interior is not hand sewn leather. I think this is the point that 512tr was thinking. When you add the twin turbo set up to a normally aspirated engine you can get crazy horse power. Does that make you a great engine builder?

DM is right, No V-12, but I understamd your dissappointment with the turbo setup as a bandaid to bumping a yellow dog.

 

Nissan GTR, it's going to be a beast when it comes out in the US.

 

The F-40 is the final evolution of sorts beginning with the 308. The 12 has no heritage with the F40.

lastly, the F-40 is one of the last modern Ferraris to get Enzo Ferrari's approval for production. So, essentially, you are arguing with Enzo Ferrari.

 

The F40 is PERFECT the way it is, I wouldn't change a thing about it

 

GTR is already in Hong Kong and it is abeast. But back to the F40, the V8TT is its' heart and soul. V8TT will make a big come back. I will hope to get an F70 - the next incarnation!

Exactly!

The 288GTO was built to compete in Grouppe B racing, and the V-8 twin turbo was the appropriate power plant for that effort, the F-40 is a further development/evolution of that effort. The F-40 should have no other engine than what it has, so no V-12 or Turbine conversions please.

its an interesting question actually in my eyes, and this is why.
Ferrari are famous for 12 cylinder engines
the F40 is to many "the ultimate Ferrari" yet it doesnt have the heart and soul of one.

now i understand why it has an TT V8 but my heart still sort of wishes it didnt - if you get me.

In my own mind, the twelve cylinder engine is the correct modus operandi for the true Ferraristii. You are most welcome to attend an audition upon my local Grand Prix circuit colloquially known hereabouts as a certain A** Dual carriageway. Furthermore, all the twelve cylinder cars will pull away from a standing start in top gear. In my own mind there is no question that the F-40 would have been infinitely better with a proper twelve cylinder engine and no turbochargers.

Someone honestly needs to make a separate forum for "512 Tea Are's Daily Question." I think some of these questions are very intriguing and read from start to finish. Others, like this one, simply clutter the board.

The F40 was an amazing automobile no matter what powered it. If it was up to the majority of this board even Civics "should really have had a twelve cylinder naturally aspirated orchestra."
