I think it is supposed to be refinished with rubberized material. I think even the Euro bumpers have a rubber texture no?

    Ed is correct.
The U.S. bumpers are rubber. Im not sure about the finish of the Euro bumpers. I know I have seen them sold as replacements where they are listed as fiberglass, but I dont know how the fiberglass is finished, or if this is even the factory-style.
Although many U.S. 308's have their tired and worn bumpers "restored" by simply painting them, they are definitely not painted from the factory and therefore would not have a paint code for that.
Before painting, I would try restoring it yourself. I did my front bumper, and it had been painted by the previous owner. It took some time, but I used warm soapy water and a plastic spakle spatula, (as well as my fingernails ocassionally) to scrape off all the paint. Luckily I did not find any rubber repairs or cracks in the bumper, just faded rubber and some oxidation. I then cleaned it about three times with mild detergent and hot water in order to remove as much contaminant as I could. I was afraid of cleaning with any abrasive or solvent as i have seen this type of product literally eat rubber.
I then used the Mother's "Back to Black" product as directed, and my bumper looked brand new when I was done. I have also used this product on my rear-view mirrors, and the targa top on my car to great effect.
Unfortunately, after removing the paint, I found that my rear bumper had cracks and a chunk that had been repaired. The repair material, (although nicely done) was not black, but a rust red color. Therefore, I couldnt use the same method as my front bumper. I have not decided if I will try and get a replacement, or follow up on rubber bumper restoration specialists I have heard about.

My front bumper has some cracks and must be repaired. I think it is painted. The material inside the bumper looks like polyester with glasfiber. The surface is nice shining black. It is a euro version. If I can repair it and paint it, it wil be as good as new. I use my car, it is not necassary that it is in an original showroom condition but I want it to be nice and clean though. A paint job will be just fine.

You can spray on the original rubberized coating. I know it is possible to do this. I bet if you asked around to a few of the paint shops, they will know what I am talking about. If not, I know a guy here that does it. I can ask him how it is done and maybe the paint shop over there can do it per his instructions.

This is what I use it's very durable and flexible. It's also close to the original finish.

    miketuason,

I thought Sem was only distributed in the US, but I found a safetycard in dutch. So, it is probably known here as well. I question though because you mentioned it is flexible. Is it for a US bumper with a rubbercoating or for a euro bumper?

    jwa,
Do you have a colour code of the 'rally black'?

    Thanks,

I had my cars front and rear bumper resprayed. They seem to be as good as new now.

Bart, What spray paint did you use? Do you have any pictures on the paint and the new resprayed bumpers?

I have not asked what spray it was. They told me that is was black but satin. If you really need to know I can ask a paintnuber.
I have no pictures yet. They look as new though.

I have seen some dealers in So. Cal. spray cars with rubberized bumpers (i.e. older rabbits, etc.) with rubberized spray-on truck bedliner paint. Sounds cheezy but I would assume that they would be good and durable. Not original but a good alternative to costly bumper restos. I think they might even formulate it in whatever colours you'd prefer.
