    he's SO humble

I watch the 07 DVD a couple of times over the last week and Hamilton just comes off as a tosser, I ACTUALLY prefered Alonso on the DVD !!

Sure a lot of it is 'out of context' but please, he makes some incredibly arrogant statements and totally scripted from speaking coaches

anybody else viewed the FIA DVD yet ?

there is a funny interview with DC and MW

    opinions ??

I liked LH at the start of the year , didn't want him to win the WDC, but hoped he would do well, then the arrogance surfaced, a lot like Alonso in his year "after" winning his first WDC

OK, wait a minute .... there , got my new flamesuit on .... go for it :D

I love the line, "how few mistakes I made", yea, but those mistakes cost you the championship!!! He is rather arrogant, how people forget to be human is beyond me!

Love the sign at the beginning of the story.

I think we will see some interesting on track activity this year between Hamilton and Heikki. Not as public as the Alonso/Hamilton fued, but HK does not strike me as a driver who will roll over. Like Hamilton is going to expect him to do.

Dennis stands by equal driver policy
    Friday, 25, January, 2008, 11:31

McLaren fully intends to maintain its equal driver status policy in 2008, despite the discord that it caused between Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton last season.

Team principal Ron Dennis told the official Formula 1 website that while he expects Lewis Hamilton to once again challenge for the world title this year, he believes new team-mate Heikki Kovalainen also has the capability to do so and will be given every opportunity to prove it.

"We've always treated our drivers equally, and we intend to continue to do so," said Dennis.

"This year, both Lewis and Heikki are entirely happy with that policy, and I anticipate no problems from either of them in that regard.

"I expect them to be competitive and collaborative in equal measure."

McLaren was widely perceived to have lost the drivers' title in 2007 because it failed to contain the feud between Alonso and Hamilton while staunchly refusing to support one over the other in a bid to win the title.

Given the team's mid-season advantage, had either driver taken the lion's share of results he would have ended as champion.

The policy was was also arguably the source of the feud, with double world champion Alonso believing that rookie Hamilton should have fallen in line and supported his title campaign.

But while a 1-2 system such as that traditionally employed by Ferrari would certainly give Hamilton better odds of mounting a successful title challenge, McLaren intends to stick by its long-standing ethos of equality.

For his part, Kovalainen has made an impressive start with his new team – outpacing Hamilton in testing at Valencia this week.

"Watching him from the sidelines, and then studying our findings, we at McLaren Mercedes thought Heikki looked impressive in 2007 – and he's impressing us already in 2008," Dennis said.

"Having said that, though, I want to add that he's a delightful individual: easy-going yet hard-working. Talented, of course, too.

"So we're delighted to have been able to bring him into the 'family'.

"As regards pushing Lewis, that isn't the way we look at it.

"No, Heikki is already integrating himself into our team and our company, and we fully expect him to perform well for us this season."

Hamilton stated on ITV's Parkinson show over the winter that he believed himself to be de facto team leader, but has since made it clear he does not expect preferential treatment or equipment.

"I don't want any advantages, any head starts. We should be a team, it should be equal," he said.

"I just like fairness, and I want Heikki to have the exact same opportunities. If he does and I beat him, there's the reward."

Dennis says he expects F1's most successful ever rookie to be even better in 2008 – and certainly good enough to win a title on his own merit.

"Like all able and ambitious racing drivers, Lewis wants to win," said Dennis when asked how Hamilton would recover from the "bitter" disappointment of missing out on the title at the final round in 2007.

"So, yes, he was understandably disappointed to have been beaten to the world drivers’ championship at the final hurdle last year.

"Having said that, I think your phrase ‘bitter disappointment’ needs to be put into context.

"Lewis won four grands prix and missed the world drivers' championship by a single point – a record-breaking feat for a rookie.

"As such, he had a marvellous first season in Formula 1.

"He's still only 23, he's still learning, and he's still improving."

I think based on how he disrespected Alonso last year, it would seam he would expect to be the default #1 this year causing HK to "roll over" .

Disrespected him in the fact he didn't roll over for him you mean, I respect him for that.

He knows the script, no #1 status, if HK is there to win and keep him honest all the better IMO.

If there's some logic there I fail to see it. LH didn't 'disrespect' Alonso, unless your understanding of 'respect' is that he should have 'rolled over' and let Alonso win despite their equal status. He knows exactly what McLaren's policy on this is, so why would he now expect HK to 'roll over' for him?

I think the disrespect came in when the team told LH to let Alonso pass and he did not, then Alonso pulled that stunt in the pits. I enjoyed the head to head racing. Alonso rightly had expectations that LH would have listened to the team and pulled over. That is what I had in my mind when I wrote that. So if the roles are now HK being in front of LH and the team tells HK to pull over and let LH pass, you can bet the house LH will expect HK to pull over.

I think in that incident he was thumbing his nose at the team than disrespecting Alonso, but I take your point. I hope lessons were learned by everyone involved. But there there will again be no team orders this year and HK will not be told to pull over (in a race) unless he is out of the running for the WDC.

Wow, last season Alonso was criticized for expecting Hamilton to roll over, now this year Hamilton is being criticized for not rolling over to Alonso?!?

This entire debate is a waste of bandwidth.

Alonso is a race driver, Hamilton is a race driver, they are in the sport to win. there is nothing different from their attitudes than Senna or Schumacher before them. I would much rather see two committed drivers go at it then see a patsy like Massa playing lapdog. there are #1s in the sport and #2s, Senna and Schumacher were born to be #1 drivers, I think Alonso, Hamilton and Kimi are as well. With that comes a certain egocentric attitude. Nothing at all wrong with that, if you think there is then you are following the wrong sport.
