    THis is a picture of my grandpa right when he entered the 10th mtn division in '41...Does any one know what type of pistol he is holding? Im going to pick one up....

    My guess would be that it is a Smith & Wesson M1917, .45 caliber, 5.5" barrel.

    Do realize it requires the use of half or full moon clips as the .45ACP is a rimless cartridge.

    Actually, if you practice the clips actually load about as fast as a speed loader. The short cartridge helps loading speed as well compared to a .38SPL pr .357Mag for instance.
