    This photo was taken about 2 seconds before he crashed! Only 30 meters on when the higher wall came to an end, he could not balance the car anymore, crashed against the left wall bounced back, rolled and crashed fatally. The car was beyond repair and -according to the Factory- was scrapped!

    I did suspect it being a Maserati as the frame is very different I have ever seen on a Ferrari and the car also has a front mounted gearbox. As I don't have proper records on Maseratis, I kept trying anyway also prepared to deny almost any Ferrari offered as the correct answer. Your guess of 0503GT was a very good one, although I think that this car did not catch fire either! Best wishes, Kare

    Luglio raced 0665GT with #317, my guess for #316 would be Galluzzi and 0515GT for Scuderia San Ambroeus.

    Kare, just as a point of interest, in post 3524 you say:

    "0682MDTR did not burn, it was just beaten up pretty badly."

    In Bernard Cahier's report on the 1959 Targa Florio, printed in Road & Track, Sept 1959, he states:

    "I saw the Ferrari of the Sicilian team, driven by Starrabba, burning furiously after hitting a wall. Fortunately all the incidents brought only slight injuries."

    I was obviously wrong about the identity of the burning car in the picture, I thought this quote answered the question based on the clue about the Targa Florio. I forgot about the Giro event.

    The describtion of the car is wrong on that site: it was NOT a 200S (that was fitted with a 2.0-liter 4-cyl.-engine and RHD)! In fact and confirmed by the photos of the car prior to the tragic incident confirms it clearly as an A6GCS (this car was fitted with 2.0-liter 6-cyl.-engine and is LHD).

    Here's a couple I recently acquired, the top one features 250 GTO #4399 at Outon Park in 1965, driven by Mike Salmon.

    The lower one is signed by David Piper and is a Series II GTO wearing race number 30. Does anyone have any ideas from what race this is and which GTO it is?
