Interesting reading. But I have noticed along the 101 through Thousand Oaks the K band going off a lot in the same areas.

I noticed that also. Just like the 101 at Malibu Canyon from the microwave antenna array on the overpass . I don't see any obvious new microwave antenna installations in T.O. I have been getting random blasts all along the 101 lately.

Around here Ka is usually some sleepy CHP guy with his unit on and in the area.(rarely falses) The only other thing to worry about(the most) is laser and the detector won't help you much other than to let you know he's zapped you. If you were speeding you're pretty much toast anyway and if he feels he wants to give you a ticket regardless then you're done too. So, I don't see K being much of a concern other than to let you know one of those speed alert signs is coming up.

My problem is that my V1 never goes off! Very rarely it goes off, and I know it works because it goes off where there is a speed trap ahead. For some reason recently I noticed that it is not going off on those mobil speed post machines. "Your current speed is:...."

This has been driving my wife and I crazy. So do we understand if the V1 has a solution. Is turning off the J feature the answer? How does one do that? What does that do to the laser detecting capabilities?

I'll kiss anyone that has the answer. Take that back. I'll buy anyone with an answer a drink.

Ka is usually all I worry about. Laser detection is hugely unreliable, and even then, they've already got your speed.

A high quality laser jammer will protect you from laser. It's saved me several times!

Would it be a safe assumption that most of the CHP and local PD are using Ka band or laser and simply turn off the K band mode on our detectors to eliminate this issue?

Seems to me all street level speed traps between LA and OC are now LIDAR. CHP for the most part will pace you or get you for weaving between cars, tail gating, etc. Not so sure how usefull radar detectors are anymore around here.

Spoke to an engineer at Valentine today and we can program a pause into the K band sounding off without loosing the integrety of the K band function. The K band blasts we're experiencing on the freeways only last a couple of seconds, so the unit has the capability to set a time delay in the sound going off. The light will still signal, but no sound. I plan to do this tomorrow. I've attached the link below with instructions on how to do it.

    Hope this helps.

I have had K and X band turned off for 5+ years. Never picked any police up on those bands when I first got the unit.

Radar Cruse control is the key problem from other cars that have the new systems. Its most likley the problem with false readings.

I use my V1 on logic mode, just to be safe. "all bogeys" gets annoying quick, and "little L" (logic) does a fair bit of filtering. Advanced logic does a lot of filtering, and I dont like that for the odd speed signs/speed traps tha use K band.

this is true. CHP hasnt switched to laser AFAIK. they still use Ka.

city police in most areas have, save for the odd ones that just leave the radar on in their patrol cars.

It could be K band drones in California.

Radar Devices Capture Real Time Data

    July 13, 2005

SpeedInfo.com has developed a new system to provide real time traffic reporting data by installing over 110 K band radar guns in the Bay Area of California.

These K band solar powered radar guns are currently mounted on top of poles along the 280 Interstate. Subscribers to the system include radio and tv news traffic reporting stations, providers of real time GPS navigation systems, and the California Department of Transportation.

Doug Finley, a spokesman for SpeedInfo, contacted Radar Roy to provide updated information regarding their system.
Doug related that by the end of August they plan on having over 300 units installed around the Bay Area. The information gathered from their devices can alert subscribers over a navigation system, cell phone, or over the web of traffic congested areas.
To answer some concerns that some radar detector users have voiced since their program started, Doug recommended that users could deactivate K band from their detector, as the California Highway Patrol in the Bay area use Ka band exclusively.

I am looking into purchasing a much needed radar detector, especially after my CHP encounter turn into a citation. From the read, it seems as the Valentine 1 is the best out there?

I turned off my K band circuitry. No more false signals and CHP and local PD here in T.O. & Simi are still using Ka as evidenced by three encounters today. No problemo.

If you are not well informed, this might be important to know:

    ______________________________
    Radar & Laser Jammers
Under California law, the use of radar and laser jammers is illegal. It is also a felony under federal law to jam or attempt to jam police radar signals. Many states criminalize the mere possession of a radar jammer.
