I just bought a Canon XT last week and Im looking at lenses for it. I would like to have as few lenses as possable. The bulk of my photography will be cars with a little scenery thrown in. So what do you guys think will be the best to go with?

    Thanks,
    Nate

Some of the EF-S lenses are great bang for the buck. It is all about how much you want to spend. If you want to go the cheaper route (that is-- under $500 or so) I would recommend the 28-135 or the 17-85. If you have a little more money and wanter some nicer glass, the 24-70 or the 24-105 are great walk around lenses.

Of course-- then you need a telephoto for track days, some primes for portraits and low light shooting, a flash..... etc etc etc But I wouldn't worry about that yet :D

A cpl(circular polarizer)filter is a must for the automotive photography...

I still disagree. Most of what I consider my best automotive shots were taken without a CPL.

The only musts for automotive photography are (1) a camera and (2) a car. :p

My first filter suggestion to anyone who will be taking photos outdoors is a grad ND.

If you’re on a budget I would go with Sigma lens there 17-70mm is very nice and can’t be beat for the $360 price, that lens should take care of most you cars stuff, as for scenery I would go with the Sigma 70-300mm lens.

I'd also recommend 28-135 IS, or 24-105 if you can stretch the budget. They are both very versatile lenses.

I wouldn't say CPL is a must for automotive photography either.

I would agree about the CPL, the first time I really put it to use was at a dealership (FoW) and it slowed my exposure down so much I had to take it off. It did produce a nice effect outside but it isn't necessary.

For cars your best lens for the XT will be the 17-85IS or 18-55IS, with a CPL filter for better saturation.

If im not mistaken the 18-55 comes with the camera from the factory correct? I am watching a couple 17-85 lenses on ebay now to get a general idea of what they go for. If anyone has a nice one they want to get rid of I would like to buy one.

Who makes good lenses and who doesnt. For instance I found a very good deal on two Sigma Lenses and another good deal on a Tameron Lense. Heres the ebay link. Would a 28-70mm work well for auto photography too?
