That really is a great photo of Mark. The first pro race I went to was the 1972 Riverside Can-Am. I didn't have a drivers license yet so I talked a friend into going so he could drive. We were wandering through the garages Saturday morning and my friend was very nearly run down by Donohue in the Penske 917/10 on his way to pre-grid. As my friend jumped out of the way, a helmetless Donohue gave a quick glance over his shoulder to make sure he was OK. He turned back and must have seen the astonished look on my face and gave a quick shrug sort of to say "oops!". I'll have to try and find those photos. They won't be very good as all I had at the time was a pocket Instamatic.

    Cheers,
    Kurt O.

Kurt, please find those photos. Quality doesn't matter here, its the story that's important.

Here is a B&W of James Hunt shot at Mosport during the Canadian GP, I think 1974 or 1975. Notice the lack of guard rails, and although the cars were attractive, the offered little protection for the driver. I think I mentioned this before, one of my prized possessions is a piston from the McLaren that Hunt autographed for me at the Glen. I remember Hunt in one race, bad stomach flu, he drove anyway, repeatedly threw up in his helmet. Most of us would call in sick.

Photo information: I primarily used a Nikon F2 Photomic, had a motor drive but I found that the motor drive took away the artistry of that one great shot. If you shoot 10 frames, one is likely to be good, what's the beauty of that? All the photos I have posted were shot single frame. I also carried two other Nikon bodies and usually 6 Nikon lenses, and 1 Vivitar zoom. I used the Vivitar sparingly on track, not as sharp as regular lenses.

The Vivitar zoom came in handy in the pits when doing portrait shots of the drivers, you could crop easily. I ALWAYS used a flash for pit, garage and paddock shots. Didn't matter if the sun was out, the flash added detail to faces. The brighter the flash, the better the photo.

Like the photos of Bobby Allison and Niki Lauda I previously posted:

James drove a Chevron/Schnitzer BMW I ran in 1975 (?) he split the drive with Tom Pryce. Tom stuck it on pole for the Salzburgring race, but we had engine trouble in the race. James drove at Rouen, there was a crash, he decided that the situation was dangerous, so next lap since the officials didn't throw a flag, he stopped at the start line jumped out and grabbed the red flag to stop the race! We were DQ'd!

I remember James at Crystal Palace, in the F3 race, he crashed after banging wheels for 1/2 a lap. The drivers had a good old punch up.

    B.

But James partied with us all, in Chimay we had to restrain him from stealing a police car. Dave Purley (another great guy) won for the third time that year. Big balls slipstreamer.....

I taught you everything you know including slipstreaming 4 or 5 VW pickups along the autoroutes! Remember these? The Shadows were restored/prepared here in the shop. The Hesketh is from a test day at Snetterton.

Ron, do you have a compilation of any kind? I'd love to pick it up if available. My favorite book was always my Photo Formula 1 book I received as a gift in 1980. My younger Golden ate a chunk out of it last year:(

As for a book, I never considered it, but if some of you thnk my photos are OK, maybe I will.

There have been several examples recently in the European magazines of articles using people's photographic experiences. Also a few books of old picture collection, certainly worth checking into for yours to be published. Nice to have such a varied content in this day of Nascar/Speed overkill.

sorry to hear of Tony Dean's passing last week. I remember you did a few 5000 races with him?

    B.

Anyone have pics of his Chevron or even the Porsche giant killer CanAm! Remember him beating all the works cars?

Even those online photo books (Kodak, etc) could be cool--I just can't get enough of pre-90s racing photos.

I think the 908 was red, I never remember seeing it, just it made big news in Autosport magazine.

Our Chevron B28 was dark blue, I only ran the UK races before going off to F2 with the "works" car for Tom Pryce. Tony ran over here with Bobby Brown under the Anglo-American banner. They had a problem with some cigars at one time when the transporter returned to England. The cars were that same colour then.

Down to earth Yorkie. Fondly remembered.

    Brian.

(There were rumours that Tony could have been involved as a getaway driver in "The Great Train Robbery". In fact the movie depicted one driver as "Tony Bean". Of course some have hinted of a certain Mr. E as well....)

I remember I did see Tony Dean race, can't remember where. Would he have raced in the USA with the Porsche?

Love that turn 1 photo from Watkins Glen '77. I was there (sitting closer to the start/finish) and remember how Hans Stuck took off like a shot in the Brabham-Alfa and led handily until the track began to dry.

    COPYRIGHTED PHOTOS

A couple new B&W's, first is early IROC at MIS after switch to Camaros. The series still drew F1 drivers, Fittpaldi is the 6th car back, Ronnie Petersen is in 8th, and Graham Hill in 9th.

Second B&W is the Penske AMC Matador, driven by Bobbie Allison, either at MIS or Atlanta. Gotta love this car, actually made a nice looking racer, minimal success.

Bobby Unser looks pretty happy to be leading that pack, you can see his smile while he is looking in the mirror! Great photo. I have some of that gang I took at Mid-Ohio, I'll try to dig them up.

Got to love the crew uniforms!

And what about the pit equipment? What exactly did they need an acetylene torch for?

I mentioned earlier in this thread my experiences that brought faith and religion to me, the reason I believe there is a God, that in the good old days when racing was dangerous and sex was safe, that real, and I mean real, women existed without the help of surgeons.

A really terrific, sweet, funny lady, and I really mean lady, Linda Vaughn, Miss Hurst Golden Shifter, photo taken at Phoenix Int'l:

After shooting the start of a race, I was assigned certain pits to shoot pit stops. After a while, pit crews rmember you for not getting in their way and tend to be really cooperative.

This photo taken at Atlanta Int'l, has a bit of a sad memory. The guy holding the gas overflow can was pinned between the Matador and another car at a later NASCAR race. About a year after this photo was taken, he came up to me on crutches, and told me what happened. He lost both legs and was on prosthetics. He asked if I had any photos of him on the crew during pit stops, I did, and sent him copies of the ones I still had im my possession.
