Renault will introduce a radical new rear wing concept when the 2008 season kicks off in Australia next month, a source close to the French team has said.

The anonymous source told the Dutch website f1today.nl that the French squad has decided not to use the wing in pre-season testing so that rival teams cannot copy it.

"I have seen it in the wind tunnel and it is totally unique," the source, revealing that the concept has been nicknamed the 'W' wing in reference to its shape, said.

It is reportedly hoped that the 'W' wing could be worth up to half a second per lap.
Williams may also be toying with the 'W' concept, the site added.

Meanwhile, the team is conducting straight line tests on the Spanish island of Menorca, with test driver Luca di Grassi piloting the R28 up and down the Mahon airfield runway.

Cats out of bag now, if its true I'd expect 12 teams in Australia with W wings.

maybe that's what their hoping, "worth 1/2 second per lap" doesn't say if that 1/2 second is plus or minus ;)

It makes sense I guess. Having the couture of a W increases the surface area of the wing allowing more downforce to be made...but that also increases drag I suppose.

actually not (based solely on the added length due to the "W"). the downforce is that part of the force perpedicular to the ground. the W contour will induce a lateral component not adding to down force. As usual, i suspect it's more due to airflow managment...

I have noticed that the rear wings in F1 are starting to come closer and closer to the shape of the front wings.

Also I can find a lot of "Ferrari elements" in the design of the whole car.

They've got the Mclaren Viking Wings as well.
I think if the nose cone got any skinnier it would just be a straw.
