(from autosport) Ferrari look set to introduce a major aerodynamic update for their F2008 at the Barcelona test session later this month, although the team are unsure if it will make their current car any quicker. With the Maranello-based team's new challenger having emerged as the pace-setter in early testing, the team are already confident about their preparations for the new season. However, a big update, including wings, bargeboards and engine cover, is planned for the Circuit de Catalunya test from February 19. Ferrari's team manager Luca Baldisserri told Gazzetta dello Sport: "It's true that the aerodynamics used here is not the definitive one for the first GP. But, having seen the results, it's not a given that what we will try at Montmelo, in the last tests before Australia, will bring better performance." A report in Italian magazine Autosprint has suggested that one of the new concepts that will be tried out by Ferrari is an opening on top of the nose - between where the current Fiat and Martini logos are. Red Bull Racing technical director Geoff Willis believes the open nose concept would help improve air flow at the front of the car. "Well, it's an interesting idea," he told Autosprint. "Its function is probably to use the central part of the front wing in a better way. "You see, the way they're designed, the wings generate an area of very high pressure at that point. If you have an opening on the nose you can alleviate that pressure by letting the air get off upwards." Image Unavailable, Please Login
some photoshop images of the hole in the cone and the air flow. reduce lift at the front and add some downforce to the front wheels also vent out the topside of the nosecone to reduce drag at the front. ????????? last photo is a way to simply reduce the drag penalty of the cooling vent in the cone. Fluid mechanics are cool aren't they! The top design on the fifth picture looks like a great design to aide the down force on the front, maybe leaving some leeway to decrease the size of the front wing and cut down on drag?
Thanks for the pictures, Yellowbird! Very cool idea, I'm wondering why no one has had it before - or was it tested but didn't fulfill the expectations?
So how does this work when the design of the front wing is configured to stall at high speed and therefore scrub downforce. Adding extra downforce to the front isn't the problem, or is it? Perhaps reducing the front wing area may be the motive, but it is an intruging idea. Tony

Not all. Colin Chapman used it first time on Lotus 80 to maximize ground effect. He used design something like on your picture, but he used skirts to channel air below nosecone. After first try with front wings and without skirts, he removed wings and used only skirts. Reutemann who drive this car was totally disappointed because car was andrivable over aneven surface because skirts were not movable, and front side lose very easy downforce when skirts do not touch road. Waaayyyyy cool. Thanks for the post. By the way I wonder if this is going to affect in any way the aerodynamics of the car wile following another car on the track. Last year Ferrari claimed that there were situations where they were not able to make a pass simply because of the disturbance in aerodynamic efficiency caused by the car infront. Maybe they are doing this just to try to reduce this effect . I would sure love to see it work. It would make things a lot more interesting.
wow.... but i think, they mentioned between the Martini and Fiat logos, so must be a small one i think..
what does that have to do with anything? you two are both all knowing because you support Massa? puhleeeeease!
Maybe what they are hinting is that they have some sort of inside curve? I remember last year 3 races before the end of the season when bunch of people here had already crowned LH a champion, someone here (I don't remember if it was YB) stated as an absolute fact that Raikkonen will be a champion. When asked they said that they were told so but could not say more. Well guess who won the WDC. I am not saying that I blindly believe that FM will win just because Ron and YB said so, but I would not hurry to disregard their remarks.
inside curve? no. it's the smug implication that just those two Massa supporters know what they're talking about, that their views doubtlessly have more validity than others, that irks me. i predicted at the beginning of the 2007 season Kimi would win WDC, and he did win it, but does that mean i had an inside track? i don't post comments implying i'm a know-it-all, and that my opinions hold more water than others, and further, that anyone who doesn't agree with me is an idiot ...TRon: "because i know i'm right"...blah
almost the same thing, we have here... http://www.f1technical.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4589&st=0&sk=t&sd=a Posted: Fri Aug 24, 2007
Ooooops! Looks like YB is getting his info not from the inside curve but from another forum. The opening and vent are actually the size shown in the very last, and very, very small, photo in YB first post. It's not to pull air from under the nose to the top, it's to help reduce the high pressure build up at the tip of the nose.
Of course this is just a rumor and the info came from a lot of forums, web sites and media notes and speculations all the photos like I said are photoshop or computer generate. Remember this is not Ferrari info the first web site who said something about the hole in the F2008 cone was on early January in the f1 bulletin by Ivanoff. autosport.com and la Gazzeta spot this rumor one month later so I said PHOTOSHOP and never give credit for the sorce because is from a forums and gossips. and almos all the info on the F1 techfrum came from the f1 bulletin Image Unavailable, Please Login
And if some one want an aero up date spot but dont have any more info about it just the photo from a F1 photographer @ Sakhir. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
