It wasn't completely drifting, but a friend and I went to Bobby Ore's stunt driving class in California. It isn't about high speed racing, it's about controlling what appears to be chaos. I can't see how a car enthusiast wouldn't like it, but to each their own.

I think it's dumb as hell, so like one of the fans wrote, I don't spend time watching it. Instead, I try to budget my viewing time to catch Formula 1 races. And if you think people scratch their heads about the appeal of drifting...:)

I dont watch it either but I dont think it's "dumb as hell" as you say. Try it sometime you might like it and then you might not be so ignorant to not appreciate skilled driving.

So, me not liking something gives you the right to label me as ignorant? Since you're obviously so intelligent, see if you can guess what I'm thinking right now.

That's what they said about rap music and the internet. We can add yours to the list.

Umm I'm doubting you know the true meaning of ignorance because it's not labeling one as dumb and I appologize for offending you. As one who has 'drifted' in a street car I know of what I speak about it being a true joy to do.

I've relaxed, thanks. As something to do, I can see why it could be fun. As entertainment I don't get it. But like I said, I watch F1 which puts me in a glass house.

For what its worth, here's me wasting some rubber in my '90 RX7. Rosso Scuderia painted by yours truely.

Its damn fun, too bad certain movies (I can't even bring myself to say the name) and other press gives it just a twisted and moronic image. Oh well. Its so much fun, right up there with 125cc shifters.

Drifting is actually (IMO) a type of rallye driving but in more stylized manner (excessive power sliding, etc.). Might look pointless to some but its actually rewarding (when performed correctly) once experienced. It saved me a few times (during heavy rains) from losing it and made me look like a "hero" after. I also do supermotard racing which is also somewhat like drifting. And yes, the local tyre shop in my area loves me!

Ironically, as you and I both know, some of the biggest names in US drifting were the drivers in those movies. They certainly helped the pockets of Sam and Tanner!

Drifting IS pointless, but it's still a competition. The top level cars are professionally built, and very complete.

I'm not a fan of drifting, but I can appreciate it. I see it as worthwhile in the same was as autocrossing: Both of them teach you better car control. Both require precision and control to do well. (And both should be fun. :))

Let's face it, driving a car around in 2nd gear in a big parking lot through some cones is pretty stupid, too! ;) And it's just as hard on the car. (And yes, I enjoy autocrossing!)
