Saturday night pilot ran off end of runway landing and wound up in median of International Parkway. You can see the dealership in background of picture. Story I got from pilots site was he had taken his girlfriend up to propose and with friends and family on the ground watching he set the plane down too late and should have gone around, but instead slid off end of runway.

Maybe this should be taken as a sign to reconsider this marriage?

You know, I drove by there a couple times on Sunday and noticed some trees got damaged over there.

I didn't see any skid marks on the road that lead to the trees and figured that it had to be a plane. I'm glad at least it didn't crash through the windows of Boardwalk at least.

I remember when I heard this the other night on WFAA Channel 8 news, with the address given I didn't know how close it came to the dealership. Scary stuff indeed.

Those would've been found on the pilot's cockpit seat and his trousers/knickers! :D

At least they all walked away without any serious injuries. That's the best way to leave any airplane.

Rob, you should be the one to offer this extended family the "actually, flying is safer than driving" lecture...

Airlines are safer than driving! :) I would tell them if son-in-law thinks landing on second half of a short runway is OK that they better say their last goodbyes to daughter. :D No shame (or not much) in going around, SNJ5 and Fastviper only teased me 30 minutes or so. :)

OK, quick off-the-topic by a click or two, go around story.

When I was a young lad of about 20, I was most anxious to get qualified in the V-tail Bonanza. You had to get quite a few hours of retractable and high-performance time to be able to rent it. Building up hours in a Beech Sierra, (the step up retractable trainer), I flew down to Lawton, Oklahoma.

An ice storm ensued that morning after I left, which put black ice all over Wiley Post runways. So, our young pilot spends the flight back listening to all the mighty Aero-Commander pilots marvelling over the lack of any braking effect. He is nervous to say the least, never having tried a glare ice landing before. Comments were made that some snow piles were now building up here and there to catch a wheel and send you sideways.

I ask the tower for a low pass, and carefully plan my touchdown point and roll out path. The plan was to not use brakes at all, just let it run down the speed by itself. I clean up the flaps and gear, go back around, and FORGET THE GEAR!!!

Only when the screaming gear horn wakes me up, and then the screams of anguish from the tower, to I go full power, claw back up in the air and do the go-around ONE MORE TIME. I had come within a very few feet of touching the prop.

The actual landing was a greaser, the ice not at all a factor, and it just slowed down all by itself to turn off normally at my regular taxiway.

They say there are only two kinds of retractable pilots - ones who have done a wheels up, and ones who are going to later...I am a scared "saving it for later" guy for now.

Geez, I hear that about ground loops on tailwheels too! :)

I have one more flight to get my complex, I nailed everything else, but instructor had quietly pulled the fuse on landing gear in air and at the numbers I put the lever down on the 182 RG then went about everything else on the checklist and slowing the plane down. He wasn't impressed I took 10 seconds to realize the gear wasn't down. I tried to argue there is plenty of time between lever and lock to take care of other stuff before confirming the gear. :)

Can't you actually SEE at least one of the wheels on a 182RG?

I will tell you another little shameful secret about ground loops - none for me yet with about 400 hours in Citibrias, but 5190X had a really bad habit of popping loose the tailwheel control springs if you were not very soft about touching the back wheel. Then you cannot steer, and have to shut down right on the runway in front of god and everybody to hook the springs back up.

Lots of fun with the seasoned old guys at the tower/terminal restaurant after a couple of those.

Yep, you see left one out window and then a side view mirror on right strut. Not sure that I would be 100% comfortable not viewing them directly, not sure I trust a little light. :)

Heck, the Skyhawk Jennie and I took to Fredericksburg last weekend I landed, put flap lever back up, and after parking realized the flaps were still down even though lever was up. Called the owner and he said just to jiggle the wires a little bit, sure enough they went up. :D

I thought the brakes were for turning? :D

I was taught that the brakes were for stopping, the rudder was for turning. If you have any crosswind at all, (and you DO in Oklahoma City) then you WILL want the steerable tailwheel working. Especially if you have to pay for the brakes!

But I do have some hours in those 2 and 4 seater Grumman low-wings (Yankee, etc.) that had no nosewheel steering at all - you did have to drag the brakes to get anywhere.
