What product would you use to bond carpet to a car's floor? Or what else would you do for lots of edge curling? Thanks!
Dear Ferraristi, You need 3M General Trim Adhesive # 08088.....slightly larger glue stream for better adhesion with rough carpet backing. Avalible at Walmart / Home Depot Super 77 is a much finer spray glue....better for leather. Shamile Freeze....Miami Vice !
Liquid Nails...comes in squeeze tube or chaulking gun tubes. Worked great on some carpet coming loose in the passenger footwell of my previous 308GTS.
I asked the upholstery shop that was recovering my interior this exact question. I was doing the carpet while he was working on the "parts". He said to use this stuff http://www.dap.com/product_details.aspx?BrandID=46&SubcatID=8 It's what he uses in his shop and can be rolled or painted on or thinned and sprayed. I can tell you from experience that it sticks very well if used properly. It should be available at most home improvement stores. I bought a gallon and ended up using most of it for the whole carpet set and a few odds and ends here and there. If you're just trying to do repairs to small spots I think it also comes in quarts.
Rereading the application, trying to tack down some edge curling, then yes, contact cement by all means. Apply to both surfaces, allow to dry a bit, then press them together....I would put some weight down on it overnight too.
+3 Worked great. I found my carpet was detatching from the velcro strips the factory used (which were still in good shape.) I sprayed the velcro strips with the adhesive and put the carpet back down. Worked like a charm.
Has anyone added any additional "backing" to their carpeting to provide some structural rigidity? For example, my footwell carpets have loosened up, and need re-glueing....but seems as if you do, they will lose some of the natural curvature, and become more indented as they form to the footwell. I always see the re-do's of interiors looking nice and evenly curved. Any ideas as to a bit stronger backing? or heat/noise shielding as well?
I would be cautious on light color carpets. Maybe it doesn't matter on black carpet, but some contact cements bleed through the carpet and leave stains, which appear months after application. I have seen several white new headliners with that mess as well as light carpets. I use a special carpet cement I get from a specialist upholstery shop. They stock it in big containers and I get a cup of it for coffee funds. Best Regards from Germany Martin
I use my old orginal carpets with double tape, they stick even when I push the gas pedal, and the sound the sound, oh my god the weber song, jezus? Best regards Patrik, (hi Martin)
