    Well , today I decided to change things up and work on the car some more [now that it's up on stands]. I proceeded to remove the engine lid, strip the luggage compartment and then onto the motor. I took the air box off so I can clean and detail it and gain access to more hoses. I also removed the rear valve cover to service the gasket. I found the rotor screw and washer laying in the dizzy cap [good thing I was in there] and the cam seal was leaking... actually the whole left side of the cam cover was soaked and most evertything below. I have a lot of built up grease to remove. I also found a spark plug socket in with the digiplex, just laying in there. I will be replacing the fuel injectors,cleaning up all of the associated plumbing, etc. I'll update as I go.

    One thing I must say is Ferrari shure did jamb everything in the bay...it's pretty trickey navigating things. I can see why engine out service is easier.

    It's the Wife's Beetle Convertible [Turbo of course] ;) As you can see we were into German cars a few years ago! That's a 944 and GTI in the backround and my old house in Clearwater...we now have a 3 car garage so I can keep the toy inside.

    Just got done cleaning up the cam cover. Polished the raised areas now I have to find something to clean up the matt areas a little better...any ideas out there? I used some Mothers aluminum polish with a power ball, minimal effect. Note the small cracks at the old air pump studs [lower left]...just an eyesore. I may try a filler.

    Eagle 1 etching mag wheel cleaner really shines up aluminum. It is an acid etch. Try it on something you don't value first or try it someplace that won't show. And don't get it on the parts that you already polished!

    Hey Man why are you always like one step ahead of me on this Car! I mean I only had mine 2 weeks! Just did some tearing down tonight

    This is what I get on a car that has been sitting for 7 years.

    oil leaks and some surface corrosion

    have fun with the work! Time to take off my bonnet so I can get in to the hard to reach areas!

    I will be up on stands for about 3-4 more weeks. I had to "custom order" Goodrich brake lines so I will do other things in the interim.

    How difficult was it to remove the belt covers? I take it removing the air box and AC are first...anything else get in the way?

    If you remove the intake plenum be VERY CAREFUL with the rubber gaskets. They have aluminum washers that will dislodge and drop off. I lost one and haven't found it [unless it wasn't there to begin with]. The intake valves were closed at that port and I could see nothing was down there. Still looking ;)

    In your third photo, is that a small hole in the top of your gas tank?

    Well For the Rear one I ended up removing the hoses going into the fuel distributor and I also had to remove the hardware holding the distributor in so I could have enough wiggle room to get it off.

    I have not taken off the Fwd belt cover yet but I hop[e to do it without breaking the A/C lines and losing my freon (if its there) LOL

    One Fchatter says it can be moved out of the way without risk of loosing the freon. Mine is empty so it's not an issue ;)

    No...it's a paint chip ;) I'm more worried about the missing spacer from the plenum gasket :(

    Today I replaced the filler neck hose, vent and overflow. The filler neck and crossover were in pretty good shape. I drained the tanks and removed the crossover hose but NAPA gave me a replacement that is a tad too small. Need to find the correct size.

    Anyone have a source?

    Good job on the fuel filler hose. We don't need anymore scary 308 moments!
    Make sure that you are going around and tightening every hose clamp that you can reach while you are there. When I installed the X-OST, I took the time to tighten all the hoses that were blocked by the exhaust. Found one that was too loose. Not anymore. :)

    I have decided to take everything off to the intake manifolds. I want to do a complete top end clean up and replacement of hoses, clamps, grease removal, polishing...you name it. It's cheap insurance IMHO. Also want to replace the fuel injectors. It's actually cheaper than having them sent out to be serviced.

    It will also help me find that elusive missing spacer ;)

    YES !!!!! I just found the spacer!!!! What a releif...it fell below one of the cooling hoses onto the top of the motor. I was pulling all the hoses and there the sucker was...just laying there in all of it's glory. This IS better then Christmas morning ;)

    I am now holding off on removing the intakes...they are practically welded down anyway ;) I'll just do a nice cleanup and replace everything in that area. Attached are "before" progress pictures. The flood is from the coolant hoses I removed. The last photo is the new filler neck hose.

    Did you find a size and source for the fuel tank crossover hose. Mine are coming off this weekend along with the oil cooler lines and the rest of the water hoses.

    If you are talking about the lower crossover pipe and the two connecting hoses on either side, IIRC, I ended up getting 1 3/8" marine fuel hose. It is very heavy duty and has a reinforcing wire in the casing. It is a tight fit, but with a little silicone spray I got it on, clamped it in place, and it works great. BTW, don't tighten the clamps on either side until you have the center piece properly situated and the center clamp on. Otherwise, you'll probably have to loosen the clamps in order to move the crossover pipe into position (guess how I learned that one... LOL).

    I searched the forum and found that 1-3/8" is the size and the sources are either a Marine supply or Newco Products in CA [818] 341-9216.

    You can have my leftover filler hose or get it at NAPA.

    Thank you for the offer but I already have the fuel filler hose, got it at NAPA also. Now I know where to go looking for the fuel tank cross over hoses. Hope everyone has a Great weekend.
