de Boer's registry book says that Stanguellini Formula Juniors were made from chassis number 101 through 204, inclusive, so that would mean that 104 examples were produced in 1959 (and 1960?).

From 1958 to 1963 Formula Junior replaced the motorcycle engined 500 cc F3 cars as the stepping-stone to Formula 1. It was the brainchild of Italian Count 'Johnny' Lurani and provided for 1.0 or 1.1 litre production engines, and gearboxes in mini Grand Prix chassis. In its short 6 years, the design span covered the major progression of racing car evolution from ladder frame front-engined cars, through space frame cars with proprietary suspension like the Alexis HF1 [still raced today by FJHRA Co-ordinator Duncan Rabagliati], rear engined spaceframe's such as the Coopers, to the full monocoque of the Lotus 27.
Jim Clark, John Surtees, Jochen Rindt, Mike Spence, Graf Wolfgang Von Trips, Gerhard Mitter, Lorenzo Bandini and Giancarlo Baghetti were amongst the G.P. Stars who formulated their careers in FJ. Races were run from Estonia to Australia, Macao to Cuba, with hundreds of cars competing regularly across USA and East and Western Europe.

The Stanguellini's had Fiat 1100 engines.

    Hi Mike and all,

The car is in your photos is chassis N. 00148, a 1959 car that is at DriverSource in Houston, TX ... if you want to see it again and perhaps take more photos. That particular car has the distinction of being the Road & Track magazine cover car for April, 1960 and has a well-described history from that time until today. They also have another 1959 car, chassis N. 00157.

Counting cars made is not quite as simple as lookng at the chassis number range, although the total is not far off in any case. Roughly 100. Not all the cars from N. 00101 to 00204 were the same in specification or form. The first car, numbered 00101 was built 1949 for a 1500cc racing class that proved to be not popular enough. That car was quite different to the Formula Junior series that began 1958 with chassis N. 00102 ... although a couple of conceptual prototypes were made and demonstrated 1957 using reworked Stanguellini monoposto 750cc cars that had tuned Fiat 1100 engines in place of the bialbero 750.

Production of similarly configured cars ended 1960/61 with chassis number 00200, the last few cars having independent rear suspension in place of the live axle located by pull wires or sliding blocks. Some "spare chassis" have subsequently been "finished" in more recent years with higher chassis numbers as well. The chassis niumbers 00201 and 00202 were "Delfino" cars that had mid-mounted engines (popularly referred to as "rear-engine") and were not at all like the car in your photos. But I bet you'd like it too!

As with many low-volume producers, there are confusions aplenty, compounded in this case by a few later chassis numbers that probably have no period history but which were indeed made by Stanguellini. And, there may be a pretender or two out there as well, so any buyer should be a bit careful to check a prospective purchase over fairly carefully.
