My cousin has a 2003 Saab 9-3, and has Comprehensive coverage with State Farm.

He just found out the car, he bought, was originally in a accident (the guy never said anything, and he thought he "knew everything," so no PPI was done), and now the CEL was on. The saab dealer looks underneath the car, and everything was in a wreck. The front diffuser thing was duct taped on, and some of the wires were cut, and put together with wire ties. Some wires were zip tied on also. It was a mess, period.

The CEL is due to an air intake pump and valve, and that itself will exceed $1,500. Then the one of the windows doesn't work, and that's a regulator, which is $400.

I've never owned a car before (too young), and I was wondering if he could claim this, and pay the deductible to get everything fixed. I was reading a post on an Audi forum, where someone's Audi TT's electrical system was completely trashed by rats, and such, and the repair came out to over $20,000. He paid $1,000, and it was fixed. And someone left a spray paint can in his Merc, and it blew up, covering his interior in paint. $750 later, he got a new interior. Insurance paid over $17,000 for it.

Does it cover stuff like this or is he SOL?

They won't cover it because there is no "claim". Both of the situations you mentioned involved something (an accident) that happened during ownership of the vehicle. This was a "pre-existing condition" and was the fault of the buyer for not inspecting the vehicle properly.

The only recourse he possibly has is to take legal action against the seller for non-full-disclosure or misrepresentation. I have had to do that before, and won (got a settlement).

He is SOL from insurance. They will cover rats eating your electrics....but not a previous owners undisclosed problem....or his lack of a PPI.

Didn't hr at least look at it himself???? Lift the hood, trunk, etc..

I would call the guy and ask for the money back (return the car). If he refuses, attorney. Maybe , call your local Prosecutor and see if you can get any type of fraud related charges put on him.

Have someone run the vin, see what shows up..

nothing shows up, on the carfax reports. We asked him what was wrong, and he said it was a "flood car." Which I know now as BS. I insisted he not buy it because Saab's are junk, but yeah... he's paying for the repairs (over 1,200) out of pocket. He should've gotten a 3 series...

What if your friend's engine mysteriously blew up - would insurance cover that?

If he ran into something that punched a hole in the sump, possibly.

I've seen that happen before. Insurance declared the car a total loss. Granted it was a ten year old Volvo. And it was a genuine accident, my brother ran over an unpainted curb in the middle of a poorly lit parking lot.

Don't commit insurance fraud. It's bad karma.

Did he tell him before or after the purchase. If you have legal standing, why keep the car, it will only get worse if it was flooded.
